Gatra was founded in 1994. The magazine has its headquarters in Jakarta.[2][3] It provides articles on news and is published on a weekly basis.[3]

The magazine's motto is Baca Gatra Baru Bicara (Read the Gatra Then Talk). The magazine folded in July 2024 due to the COVID-19 pandemic which eroded Gatra Media Group's income so that it was unable to carry out program development at all.[4]
