Hey! Why did you ping me in an edit summary?

edit

Hi there!

I like to fix referencing errors in Wikipedia. Articles that have referencing can be found by monitoring categories like Category:Pages with citation errors, Category:Pages with broken reference names, Category:Pages with duplicate reference names, and Category:Harv and Sfn no-target errors.

When I find referencing errors, I like to notify the editor that created the error so they can double-check the changes that I've made to their work. By collaborating on the fix, I can be sure I'm getting things the right way around and reflecting the intent of that original editor.

Sometimes, fixes are straight forward. But very often, they're ambiguous or unfixable. Tagging the editor helps resolve that ambiguity. If I think the article is better off with the material removed altogether (because the fix doesn't seem at all possible) then it gives the editor a notice that some material was removed or reverted and they have a shot at fixing it.

Indeed, sometimes I incorrectly attribute referencing errors and ping the wrong person. It doesn't happen often because I do my best to get it right. If I've incorrectly pinged you, I'm sorry for that. While it's pretty easy to just ignore the ping, you can also pitch in by double checking my work even if it wasn't your own edit that actually caused the referencing error.

And I'm always happy to answer questions about my fixes or the problems I've found. -- Mikeblas (talk) 19:13, 24 November 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for fixing my reference mistake on geomatics. I thought I had resolved the issues, but I missed the reference during the merge. I appreciate your help! GeogSage (⚔Chat?⚔) 17:16, 14 March 2024 (UTC)

This section helps me keep track of AfD, prods, copyvios, and other "Come back" work I've initiated. Too bad there isn't an automated way to do this in the Wikipedia UI, huh?
