Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a collection of links, nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Inappropriate links include, but are not limited to, links to personal websites, links to websites with which you are affiliated (whether as a link in article text, or a citation in an article), and links that attract visitors to a website or promote a product. See the external links guideline and spam guideline for further explanations. Because Wikipedia uses the nofollow attribute value, its external links are disregarded by most search engines. If you feel the link should be added to the page, please discuss it on the associated talk page rather than re-adding it. Thank you. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 06:23, 11 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

G'day, I added these external links because those website pages provide additional information about the location, history and actually diving/snorkelling the shipwrecks. Indeed, in some cases the page linked to was already cited as a reference for information like location, depth etc. However, if you want to make it harder for people to find this information then so be it. If that's the case, you might want to remove the external links to those dive site pages that already exist on other Victorian shipwreck Wikipedia pages. That's if you want to be consistent. Best regards, Lloyd Borrett. Lloyd Borrett (talk) 16:04, 11 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
G'day, Just so you know. The building of a database of dive site information for Victoria, Australia has been a personal hobby of mine since 2006. First the information was on my personal website, and then on diving club websites. Yes, the latest incarnation happens to have been kindly hosted on a dive shop web site for the last 8 or so years. I've recently retired and have been working solidly since to update the dive site listings, plus add new ones. There are now 580+ dive sites described. I had just finished updating all of the dive site listings that had links to Wikipedia shipwreck pages. Then I added external links to the corresponding shipwreck pages on Wikipedia that didn't already have them. Best regards, Lloyd Borrett. Lloyd Borrett (talk) 16:17, 11 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
G'day to you! No offence to you or your website, and I am not judging the quality of the information on the website. But just to let you know that there are potential issues over a conflict of interest, and a user going round adding links to a single website will always raise suspicions of promotion/spam. At this stage I am probably best pointing you to our guideline for external links at Wikipedia:External links; it's probably worth a read. If the information is useful and reliable then sooner or later other editors will start using it. Best wishes — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 21:17, 11 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
Just to add to the above, in my personal opinion a reader of Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse is most likely interested in the lighthouse and so the link to an external site about diving is probably not relevant to that article. But if there was an article on, say, Diving in Victoria then there would be a stronger case for including a link, and I doubt there would be much opposition — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 21:23, 11 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
