Etymology

From παθ- (path-), zero-grade of the root of πᾰ́σχω (páskhō, I feel, suffer). Compare the aorist ἔπαθον (épathon). Related to πένθος (pénthos), as βάθος (báthos) is related to βένθος (bénthos).
