Pluralizing abbreviations

Acronyms and initialisms, like other nouns, become plurals by adding -s or -es:

they produced three CD-ROMs in the first year; the laptops were produced with three different BIOSes in 2006.

As with other nouns, no apostrophe is used unless the form is a possessive.

Apology to User:Simonm223

I was seriously lacking in tack when I made my last comment on User talk:Simonm223so I apologize for that. He may not like me writing on his page so I'll write it here. Feel free to delete this.

When we can have a nice chat about hi fi for me it makes the wiki experience much more fun and its much easier to be more civilized. So thanks for the chat and the info you shared :))) Aaabbb11 (talk) 12:07, 20 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • In the anonymous environment that is wikipedia, it's too easy to forget there's a meat-eating [sic], beer-drinking, music-loving person on "the other side". i am thankful to you for that opportunity. -- Ohc ¡digame! 12:37, 20 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Please be careful with your edits. By changing the style of some apostrophes you reformated some 'italic in apostrophes phrases' into bold phrases, I have fixed these. For some reason you changed some <div class="center" code to <div class="centr, which means nothing - also fixed. I have no idea why you removed some wikilinks which were unique within the article. If you wish to make any further edits, please explain them on the Talk page, and definitely don't use a script, if I see format changes as a result of your edits I will just undo them rather than try to accommodate your intentions. Emerald (talk) 09:13, 24 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • I apologise for changing <div class="center" to <div class="centr, I will try and fix the code. On the other hand, the botched italics is a result of some unorthodox use of single quotes to define the name of the work – italics usually suffice. Regards,

I have fixed the code. " no rhyme or reason for this link to a surname " in your opinion, what is your objection exactly to a link to the meaning of the surname? Emerald (talk) 09:40, 24 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • many surnames have intrinsic meanings, but it is not at all the custom to link surnames within the body of the article in the manner that you linked it in that bio. One would only do so if there was a very specific reason in a particular case to link the surname, like perhaps if the person was the first of his name, in a context that explained its meaning or derivation. Please do have a look around, and have a think – I hope you would agree that linked names like George W. Bush, Steve Jobs, Michelle Branch, Oliver Stone (or on the formulation "Eight months into Bush's first term as president...") would look ridiculous. -- Ohc ¡digame! 09:48, 24 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have now fixed all the format changes. As I said, if you want anything else changed mention it in the Talk page, but don't do it - I am worried by the number of changes you make in one edit and the consequences they have. I will consider what you have said about the surname, but it is unusual, it does have a specific meaning and there are a couple of well-known people in the UK with similar names spelt slightly differently, so I believe people here would be interested. Joseph Stanislaus Ostoja-Kotkowski Comment

Hi Ohconfucius, it seems you were over-hasty in adding the "cleanup|reason=WP is not a repository for resume" tag to this article - the man has been dead for 21 years. Cheers, Bahudhara (talk) 04:56, 27 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Bahudhara: Thanks for your comment. I did not realise the person was deceased. However, that in itself doesn't necessarily invalidate the observation that the bio resembles a resumé, because that is a style issue of a Wikipedia article unrelated to a person's existence. • About half my class at school was into punk and new wave. A program called Radio with Pictures was our major source of info about what was happening. Costello was one of the first I really liked. My favourites were the first 3 albums and the fastest tracks off the 4th album, but still have other albums. Still quite like the clash. Aaabbb11 (talk) 11:53, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

WP:TIES

Hi Ohconfucius. When updating articles for WP:TIES, please take care not to break table formatting, as you did here, here and here (I have fixed these three articles). Thanks. DH85868993 (talk) 07:33, 29 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I see you have updated your EngvarB.js to address the changing of "align:center" to "align:centr" - your script was also changing "color:xxx" to "colour:xxx". (Apologies if you already realised this). Regards. DH85868993 (talk) 07:55, 29 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I've tweaked the regexes for "color:" now. Regards, -- Ohc ¡digame! 08:59, 29 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You're still breaking "color" markup, e.g. here (which I have fixed). DH85868993 (talk) 08:03, 30 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I would also suggest you possibly/probably shouldn't be changing "U.S. Open" to "US Open" as you did here (which I have also fixed) - the article title is U.S. Open (golf). DH85868993 (talk) 08:08, 30 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like the "color" issue is resolved now. Thanks for that. However please note that I only fixed and notified you about articles you edited which happen to be on my watchlist - you possibly (probably?) broke the markup in numerous other articles before you fixed your EngvarB.js, so I would encourage you to go back and check all your recent edits. Regards. DH85868993 (talk) 04:08, 1 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Spoke too soon. It looks like your EngvarB.js still needs a bit more tweaking: [1] (was it possibly because there were two "color:"s on the same line? Just a guess). DH85868993 (talk) 05:51, 1 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the eagle eye. The error is caused by the second colour not being an html color (with hash). I'll address that now and then review the previous articles I ran the script on. Regards, -- Ohc ¡digame! 05:57, 1 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Date format

How come wiki hasn't standardized on dmy? I met an ex mayor from the US recently who told me the US has gone metric unofficially. If US car manufacturer's want cheap bolts from overseas they buy metric. Drug dealers find grams convenient. So even the US can change. Aaabbb11 (talk) 09:09, 30 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • The real world is a mix of imperial and metric measurements, and people being conservative, changes come slow. Televisions, iPads, computer disk drives are measured in inches; aircraft cruse at 33,000 feet; cargo is measured in cubic feet; horses are measured in hands. Endianness is a hotly debated topic here in Wikipedia because many US editors are more familiar with the mdy format and can't or don't want to cope with dmy dates. Only there are sentiments from others who are unaccustomed to mdy dates and can't or don't want to cope with mdy dates, so there is an artificial line in the sand that keeps the peace between WP editor factions. I don't like it any more than you do but have to live with it. -- Ohc ¡digame! 01:41, 2 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Edits to Southport

Hi,

Your recent edit to Southport, amongst other things, changed "color" in CSS tags to "colour", breaking the CSS formatting. I've now reverted this, but I think you should have spotted that breakage before saving the change. In any case, if you can it's probably worth fixing the script to not make such changes within CSS tags.

me_and 09:36, 30 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Script now tweaked, thanks. I've gone back and reviewed the recent changes, and there are some affected articles. The change causes only very minor errors, and none of them display any obvious sign of errors in the read-mode of the articles concerned. Regards, -- Ohc ¡digame! 01:51, 2 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I've noticed a tiny error caused by one of your scripts, presumably re MOS:NUM. In Australian Imperial Force Touring XI, it has amended "four second-class matches" to "four-second-class matches". One for you to debug when you have time. Jack | talk page 11:23, 2 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ohc script

Nationalities

Greetings! How does your "Ohc script" put up with major nationalities? For example, Italians aren't covered by your script, so I was wondering if it's just missing...? Cheers! Jayaguru-Shishya (talk) 17:57, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Common terms

Hi again, Ohconfucius! I hope you are doing well. Anyway, what do you think about linking letter? I was editing an article about a letter, Ayin, and I noticed that your script doesn't pick up that one. I was wondering if that should fall under "everyday words" mentioned by WP:OVERLINK? Especially in the language-related articles that might already contain links to some specific alphabet. Thanks for your opinion in advance! :-) Jayaguru-Shishya (talk) 18:45, 17 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • I don't know how prevalent this linked word is, but this is the first time I have come to notice it here on WP. I'm not on the whole bothered by it being linked in the Ayin article because it does seem to have relevance and some value. If, however, you find that it's pervasively linked in more general articles, please let me know. Regards, -- Ohc ¡digame! 01:55, 18 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
    • Thanks for your opinion, Ohconfucius. I guess I was looking it from a different perspective. I was thinking that since "Ayin" itself is a "letter of the Semitic abjads", and Semitic abjads is already linked, it might be somewhat redundant to link the term "letter" as well. I think Semitic abjads is the most specific item to be linked. Moreover, since the symbol for Ayin varies among different alphabetic systems (Hebrew ע, Syriac ܥ, Arabic ع, etc.), and all of those systems are already linked in the same sentence, that's another reason why I considered the link for "letter" redundant and overtly general.
    • I just realized that I was a bit unclear with my last post, but that's what I meant by referring to language-related articles: "letter" is always an overtly general term, and every letter belongs to some way more specific alphabetical system that should be linked instead. There seems to be quite a list of articles linking to Letter (alphabet[2]. Please feel free to disagree if you feel otherwise! Cheers! :-) Jayaguru-Shishya (talk) 15:24, 18 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Utilized in order to ...

I saw you tweaked Kitoye Ajasa to change "utilized" to "used" and "in order to" to "to". I would usually fully agree with the improvement, but these were quotations. I don't know if this was a script, and if so whether it could spot text enclosed in quotation marks... Aymatth2 (talk) 16:20, 3 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Aymatth2:The script ought to leave things enclosed in quotes. I checked the script, and it seems that the problem was caused by the lack of closing quote marks in one instance; in the other, the square bracket was not anticipated. I will adjust the script accordingly. Regards, -- Ohc ¡digame! 01:29, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

When to add publisher or not

Hi, I've seen you recently made some edits to articles I have worked on, e.g. Yazoo (band), where among the edits you have removed the publishers from various sources. Please understand I am not complaining or trying to pick a fight, I'd just like some guidance as to when to include publishers or not. I'm looking at Help:Citation Style 1#Work and publisher and it says not to include the publisher when it is virtually identical to the work or journal name, which is fair enough, but has there been some consensus on this subject? Just want to know so as not to make the same errors on future articles, that's all. Thanks. Richard3120 (talk) 17:54, 22 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Migration to TemplateScript

Hi Ohconfucius. I migrated test/MOSNUM dates.js and test/MOSNUM utils.js to TemplateScript, along with the changes we discussed in March. They're up-to-date with your changes to the equivalent script/ pages, and I added some unit tests for the underlying custom regex code. The scripts produce identical results on User:Full-date unlinking bot/Test environment and User:Dl2000/testtemp7. Are these changes okay? —Pathoschild 02:54, 24 May 2015 (UTC)

Let me know when you have a chance to review the scripts. They'll be the baseline I use for the rest of your scripts, so I'll do those when these are live. —Pathoschild 17:29, 05 June 2015 (UTC)

Greetings! I was wondering if you could help me with an issue related to the Help:CS1 errors#bad date parameters? At the page, one of the items in the list goes:

"...errors in |date= caused by errors in |year=, |month=, or |day=..."

It seems, however, that |day= isn't working, and it results into a following error message:

Unknown parameter |day= ignored (help)

The reason why I am willing to use the instead of format, is that the latter doesn't fully work with the sfn references. You see, in the newspapers and journals, the dates follow the form YYYY-MM-DD, but the sfn references seem to work only when the it's referring to year (beside the author's last name, of course). The only non-functioning part seems to be day, which leaves an ugly error message at the end of the reference. Do you think this could be fixed? Cheers! Jayaguru-Shishya (talk) 19:09, 17 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) Jayaguru-Shishya, the information at Template:Cite_web#Date should help you navigate the conditions under which YYYY-MM-DD works with |date= and when you need to use |year= in addition to |date=. If you don't understand it, post some examples at Help talk:Citation Style 1 and we will help you there. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:08, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

MOSNUM dates.js conflict with Regex menu framework gadget

Hi.

There is a bit of a problem I was hoping you could help me with. I have the Regex menu framework gadget enabled. It adds a "Scripts" heading to my lefthand sidebar and adds a "Custom regex" right underneath it. (That's what I want.)

Now, every time this Javascript command is executed:

importScript('User:Ohconfucius/script/MOSNUM dates.js');

...another "Scripts" heading with another "Custome regex" entry is added. Right after it, a "TemplateScript" heading with a "Regex editor" entry is added.

Can you also reproduce this? Or is the problem on my side only? (Of course, I spent one hour and 13 minutes disabling and re-enabling each of my gadgets and imported scripts. I'd be surprised if the problem is on my side.)

Best regards,
Codename Lisa (talk) 21:21, 20 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This is true, and I myself have it three times on my sidebar. @Pathoschild: can you help/advise? -- Ohc ¡digame! 07:15, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ohconfucius. The regex menu framework is obsolete and unmaintained, so it hasn't been updated to reflect modern usage. The duplicate menus happen because it assumes it's only loaded once, which is no longer true with gadgets and script frameworks.
TemplateScript is the modern successor to the regex menu framework. It has the same features, but also benefits from years of further improvements and is actively maintained. Here's a quick comparison of the features you use:
  Regex menu framework TemplateScript
regex editor ✓ improved with syntax highlighting
custom scripts ✓ improved with editor object to simplify common operations
custom sidebars Predefined "scripts" sidebar ✓ any number of custom sidebars
gadgets & scripts ✘ causes conflicts if used in multiple scripts ✓ built-in support (any number of gadgets or scripts)
compatibility ✘ unknown ✓ all skins, mainstream browsers, and ResourceLoader
keyboard shortcuts
save regex patterns
We should update your scripts to use TemplateScript. I updated your test scripts a few months ago, but since then TemplateScript 2.0 introduced several features that specifically address usage like yours. I'm actively migrating users away from regex menu framework; let me know when you'd like to migrate your scripts and I can update them for you.
(Codename Lisa doesn't need to do anything; I'll update the gadget to use TemplateScript very soon once the last few custom scripts on enwiki have been updated, and the problem will go away.) —Pathoschild 16:59, 15 September 2015 (UTC)

Hi OhConfucious, I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't change British Oxford English to the other form, as here. Lots of people think the former is wrong, when in fact it's not uncommon, so I'd like to maintain the distinction on WP. Best, Sarah (talk) 20:15, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yevgeniy Fiks

Hi there, I've updated the Yevgeniy Fiks page to take out link spams. Please take a look and let me know if the page now works with the current citations. Does it pass Wiki standards so that we can take out the note on top of the article page? Marrkkymarc (talk) 19:46, 11 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Scripts snagging complete load of pages

Hello, this morning my Wikipedia pages weren't completely loading, and by narrowing down, I discovered that when I commented out your scripts (in my common.js), pages loaded normally again. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 12:58, 30 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Your GA nomination of Kacey Wong

The article Kacey Wong you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Kacey Wong for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already been on the main page as an "In the news" or "Did you know" item, you can nominate it to appear in Did you know. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Tomandjerry211 (alt) -- Tomandjerry211 (alt) (talk) 20:21, 6 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

and the wrong way

The change [6] has converted hundreds of date entries to dmy, instead of converting the few dmy to y-m-d format.

The change [7] has dumped references for data, instead of turning them into real references.

Given the amount of manual work to be cleaned up, it is best to revert the changes starting with from the original text and adding some minimal changes that your scripting has failed to do. Guidod (talk) 19:55, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Guidod: I notice that you have reverted all of my changes to the article. Kindly note that text including embedded external links in the form of "The EV Charger Maps website is a volunteer run effort coordinated by EV Charger News that catalogs EV charging station information across the U.S. It contains information targeted for real-world use by electric vehicle owners" is considered WP:LINKSPAM. You need to refer to WP:CITE if you wish to create references in a "wiki-compliant" manner (cites need to be be independent, third party reliable sources). Also, parameters such as "|date=2009-10" are ambiguous (although we do not use ISO 8601) and are not compliant with our guidelines on dates and numbers, and it is entirely appropriate to attempt to correct. Also, there is one section where "Park & Charge" is linked four times, and this is considered overlinking. Thank you for your attention. Date format script

Hey, OC. Are you still running your date-conversion script? If so, I have a category with 660 U.S. Olympic athletes that are supposed to be uniformly using American-style MDY dates in text, infoboxes, succession boxes, and footnote publication dates and retrieval/access dates. Please let me know if you're available for such a task. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 01:42, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page watcher) The documentation for the script is at User:Ohconfucius/script/MOSNUM dates, including instructions on how to install it so you can run it too. I run it on most pages I spend any significant time editing. GoingBatty (talk) 02:14, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed—well worth installing. Tony (talk) 02:56, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Tony1 and GoingBatty: Thanks, guys. I'm currently consumed with other semi-automated clean-up editing, and I was hoping to find a "dates clean-up specialist" to whom I could toss this little project (i.e. OC). Either of you fellas interested? I'm eventually going to need to similar MDY runs on 220 Canadians and DMY runs on 520+ Australians and Brits. Tony, you'll be happy to know I'm already using AWB to reduce the low-value links in these articles per WP:OVERLINK. It's a process. I'd prefer to spend all of my WP time actually editing and writing substantive text, but I'm sure you're familiar with that problem. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 03:16, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Dirtlawyer1: I find that doing relatively repetitive tasks like running scripts can be a welcome break from the rigours and stresses of creating or writing text. I manage to combine both in this way that hopefully diminishes the risk of burnout. If you are currently occupied with other stuff, I will be happy to look at the articles you mentioned when time permits. Please indicate the category/ies concerned. Alternatively, paste your list of articles to User:Ohconfucius/list/todo. Regards. -- Ohc ¡digame! 06:37, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Dirtlawyer—Unlike any other majority-anglophone country-related articles, Canada-related articles are permitted to go either way, but if already established and consistent, the format shouldn't be changed. Tony (talk) 07:12, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Tony1: Yes, sir. Apart from the footnotes, these Canadian swimmer articles are 90 to 95% MDY formatted in the infobox and text. The individual articles should be internally consistent, not mixed (and the ISO retrieval dates need to go!). Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 07:41, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
OC, per instructions I have added my request re Category:Olympic swimmers of the United States to your to-do list. In the near future, I will also have similar Australian, British and Canadian categories for your review, too, and others over time. Thanks for your help. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 07:41, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Dirtlawyer1: I've done a first run based on the above category – articles over 8kB that have not already been tagged use mdy dates. -- Ohc ¡digame! 10:50, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Leung Chun-ying as Chief Executive of Hong Kong, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Carrie Lam (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Script revert

Hi Ohconfucious, I've been using one of your scripts for months now, but Bagumba has reverted me today here, and told me that he is going to revert all script edits here. I was wondering if you could either tweak the script or explain why the script is right and the CS1 text is wrong? Personally I've found it very useful and this is pretty much the first issue I've had in the past thousand or so uses. The Rambling Man (talk) 17:09, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

My revert is limited to Moses Malone. I have no time to track down other ones, plus wouldn't want mass changes without discussion.—Bagumba (talk) 17:15, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I must have misinterpreted your statement "I will revert the scripts changes", sorry. The Rambling Man (talk) 17:18, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. It's like me not noticing originally that your changes were from a script. It's why we discuss things.—Bagumba (talk) 17:42, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

HKU council

Hi Ohconfucius. I am not sure about moving the HKU council list to the HKU article. The council members will change over time, while the HKU pro-vice-chancellor selection controversy should have a record of who was sitting on the council at the time the vote took place. "s" or "z"

It is a mistake to change all "ize" forms to "ise" in British English, which uses both forms. Please stop doing this - see Oxford spelling. Johnbod (talk) 17:07, 31 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

2015 Ma–Xi meeting

I think the Wikidata item for 2015 Ma–Xi meeting illustrates very well the multiple names used for this historic interaction. The Indonesian WP is the only project to opt for the English WP title order, while Cantonese and Wu Chinese WPs call it the Xi–Ma meeting. I created the article at Ma–Xi out of a desire to alphabetize the names, but have come to question my decision because other WPs are not quite following suit. I originally placed all possible names in the lead, which was refactored to the infobox. I added "Meeting of Cross-Strait leaders" to that infobox when I saw that the Chinese WP article had been moved to that title. If the choice is not to use Infobox Chinese how do we neutrally mention the other names in use for this topic? Do we move it to "2015 meeting of Cross-Strait leaders" to follow zh.WP's lead? I considered making a RFC or requested move, but figured I may as well ask you first. Vycl1994 (talk) 22:48, 8 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks for your message. My feeling when I removed the box with all the names is that there is no real bearing on what it's known as is other languages to what it's known as in English. I don't think there is any global consensus on the English name anyway, and for an event that doesn't have an official name, unlike "Xi Jinping", it's quite natural for there to be many variants as to the name. I saw no mention in the article itself about the name order or any such, but if you feel any particular name is significant, perhaps we should think about adding sourced paragraphs to the effect to attest to their importance? Regards, -- Ohc ¡digame! 07:37, 9 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, your reasoning is fair too, especially since the situation has grown even more muddled; the Spanish and Vietnamese projects have chosen to name its respective articles, which didn't exist at the time of my first post to your talk page, 2015 Ma–Xi meeting.
