Comment/question: Almost didn't see the "show" and spent time looking for the problem in the text (where I had missed it when proofreading). If the list of missing brackets is short, why hide them at all? Nice to know your bot exists.165.121.80.17 (talk) 01:47, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Looking into doing this. Thanks, 930913(Congratulate) 22:58, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A930913

I think a couple of things need to be changed.

 1. Can you change the color where the bot is pointing the error? For the color blind, the red looks like black and makes it hard to pick out the error. Red and green are the most common problem colors. Changing it to blue would be good.
 2. Can you uncollapse the box. Not everybody knows about the show button. New editors have the most problems.
 3. See GoingBatty's suggestion just above this message. Bgwhite (talk) 05:44, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
 1. Hmm, red is generally used to denote an error, though I will investigate.
 2. Yeah, it's collapsed by default because it can be long, and I couldn't work out a way for the template to determine whether it should collapse.
 3. To clarify, BracketBot will only notify you if your edit changed the number of brackets. When fixing, this can occasionally occur when closing brackets that were opened a few lines prior,, for example. This is out of the diff view, so the imbalance summons the bot. It fetches the whole page and at this point, any imbalance will cause the bot to notify you. If however you have fixed all the errors, it won't. 930913(Congratulate) 22:58, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for explaining when BracketBot is summoned. The text that the bot is currently using presumes that the imbalance was caused by the most recent editor. Since that's not always the case, I suggested the alternate text above. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 14:45, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

Thank you for your bot-generated message concerning my edit of the Juvenaly of Alaska article.

I just encountered a more difficult thing to fix, namely the title of the article Andreas Johan Sjögren. This title is actually wrong, and the article should be moved under the title Anders Johan Sjögren (cf. Finnish Wikipedia on this matter). This person is very well known among Finnish linguists, him having been the founder of Finno-Ugrian linguistics in our country, and there is not doubt whatsoever about the correct spelling of his name. However, I have not learnt how to more articles under a new title, while retaining the history of the article. Could you be so kind as to advise me on this matter? Apanuggpak (talk) 15:22, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What this article needs is some content based on reliable third-party sources. Half the online source I found on short notice, such as this one, give his first name as "Andreas", the remainder has "Anders". I'm not sure moving the page would be appropriate; a redirect might suffice. Huon (talk) 19:03, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please give us some relevant information? The page, the username that received the bot message? Without either our chances of finding this particular issue and telling you how to fix it are slim. Huon (talk) 19:03, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please advise if I need to take further action. The file is here: [Wikimedia Commons image file] Bede735 (talk) 20:36, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Google Art Project's mismatched brackets are a known problem; I believe A930913 is working on ignoring file names, but that's probably not that easy. Huon (talk) 21:46, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

BracketBot - bug with brackets matched on different lines?

Hi, BracketBot reported a mismatched bracket on this page edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ethnic_groups_in_the_United_Kingdom&oldid=558586429 but, in fact, the bracket is correctly matched a few lines further down. Assuming that I'm right that it's caused by the multiline formatting, I imagine this to be a fairly common problem with tables where splitting across multiple lines makes them easier to read and edit.

Also, the source code would be nice :)

The bot gave misleading information. There was a bracket missing at {{commas|290} inside the table. The bot thought the bracket used to close the table (ie |} ) went with the missing commas template. I fixed the missing bracket. Bgwhite (talk) 20:38, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, thanks :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by JackAidley (talkcontribs) 10:36, 9 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A suggestion

Would it be possible to extend the bots response time from 5 to 15 minutes? I do make a fair few errors with brackets, and managed to catch most of them in time, but the bot responds before I get a chance to fix a lot of them. An extension in time would give me (and others) a better chance to cathc them. Mjroots (talk) 18:16, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I also agree the time should be extended. Not sure about 15 minutes, but atleast make it 10 minutes. What do you think A930913? Bgwhite (talk) 20:32, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I'll probably change this when I get round to moving BracketBot to the labs. I also want to run some stats to calculate how soon people fix their mistake after a notice, and by extension the best time to notice. 930913(Congratulate) 00:22, 9 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your note. Page looks ok. However, last month I changed the profile picture to a better image. The painter is my father and I feel this is not a nice picture to represent him.

Someone has changed it back to the same (this) picture. I tried to send a note to this person based on last history edit but I am not sure if he got it or if I posted it right. You know it took me a while to figure out how to edit profile picture and now I can't do it again myself. Please let me know how I can change the profile picture. Thank you,

Comment/question:

86.8.111.117 (talk) 18:33, 7 June 2013 (UTC) It is true that in this form the quote of Louis Armstrong on Mina is not a real quote. However, information sources have reported this opinion of Armstrong on Mina for a very long time. It is reported in lots of books/articles/etc on Mina, some of which are already in the bibliography of the article. This should be enough to accept it as genuine. Otherwise any other information about Mina contained in each of those books should be rejected on the same grounds.[reply]

BracketBot only notifies you about articles you recently edited that don't have an equal number of [] or () characters, not about whether quotes are genuine. Human editors may be willing to help you, but only if you mention the article you're referring to. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 01:18, 8 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Diff: The point that was flagged was "...while for T > Tc (superconducting phase)...".

Comment/question: Is there a specific sequence to be used to denote the greater than / less than sign, as the "<" and ">" seem to be interpreted as opening and closing brackets for a HTML tag?

Vatsal19 (talk) 23:25, 7 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bracket bot does have a problem denoting if "<" or ">" is being used as a math symbol or is an error in coding. I'm not sure if there is a good solution to that.
 1. You can use < or < for < and you can use > or > for >
 2. I personally don't like doing that except in extreme circumstances. I know what the codes mean, but 99% of the people do not. I'd rather have somebody who wants to edit the page not have to wonder what the code means. Bgwhite (talk) 22:43, 8 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

BracketBot changes

Please update User:BracketBot/inform to include opt instructions, similar to what DPL bot (talk · contribs) does "Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions." Likewise, it'd be better not to notify unregistered and editors who have made < 100 edits.

P.S. Fix your edit notice; you can't change the terms of use of Wikipedia. NE Ent 22:14, 8 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know what you are saying by "can't change the terms of use of Wikipedia".
I'm referring to the following portions of this page's edit notice:
"By submitting this form by any means, including but not limited to clicking Save Page or a JavaScript injection, you irrevocably give all your rights to the owner of the account A930913 ("me"), including but not limited to the right to reproduce your submitted content without further consent or notification for any means without reason.
"You hereby, upon submission of the form, irrevocably waiver all rights with regards to me." NE Ent 23:47, 8 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I thought it was on the edit notices that went out to people's talk pages. You do have a point and they should be removed. Bgwhite (talk) 06:38, 9 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@NE Ent: Hmm, looks like I forgot to add that you give me your soul too (Incidentally, when one clicks the BracketBot link, that edit notice is hidden.)
As for the template, feel free to change it. There are two reasons I haven't added that, the first one being an attempt to cut bloat from the message, and the second, potentially controversially, making it not so obvious how to opt out. This is because whereas a disambiguation link would result in an extra click from a user, a misplaced bracket could ruin an entire article. 930913(Congratulate) 05:55, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Notices will still go out to unregistered and editors who have made < 100 edits as this was part of the BRFA. While over 80% of these edits are for vandalism, the other ~20% do like it and are appreciative of the notice. We also get other questions and try to answer them. Bgwhite (talk) 22:52, 8 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand why Bgwhite is answering for the bot operator, who I understand is A930913? NE Ent 23:47, 8 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Because I can. I, along with several others, have been answering questions about the bot. Just like other people speak about my bot. Last time I checked, Wikipedia is collaborative. For questions I don't have an answer to, I don't answer. Bgwhite (talk) 06:38, 9 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yup, what Bgwhite said. It gives me more time to improve BracketBot, and make other tools and bots. 930913(Congratulate) 05:55, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@Yooshimen fin: - Yes, I Fixed it in this edit.
@A930913: - You may want to change the bot message so that the default is "show" mode instead of "hide" mode (or not use hide/show at all), to make it more obvious what the error is. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 00:17, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@A930913: That looks little bit stupid because there's no bracket after question mark... But that's not big problem anyway (: --Yooshimen fin (talk) 06:34, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

BracketBot dumping on my talk page

Your bot is rather annoying and I'd rather it didn't dump all over my talk as soon as I make a silly mistake, which I usually see and correct. How about factoring in (say) an hour's delay to allow editors to notice and fix their errors? I appreciate that it's handy to be told when one's messed up, but please show us some grace! Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 00:11, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The idea is to catch the editor in the same editing session, but consideration is being given to doubling the waiting time. 930913(Congratulate) 05:55, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for replying; that would be slightly less annoying considering the new, shouty notification system, and more useful. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 18:25, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

BracketBot Update

User:A930913, User:Dru_of_Id, User:Legoktm, User:Bgwhite Just a heads up on a few changes I've just implemented.

 1. Text between <math> tags is now ignored.
 2. Name parameters are ignored (which should stop filenames causing problems.)
 3. Only <long> lists of errors come collapsed.

If you notice these causing unintended consequences, please panic.
@GoingBatty: I'm putting the notifications under the same header as that used by counter vandals to make it easier for CVs to spot other vandalism. (Chances are that if an editor gets warned for vandalism and breaks a bracket in another edit, that that edit is also vandalism.)
