Norman Borlaug Award

Salma Sultana, who bagged the Norman Borlaug Award for field research and application in 2020, is a veterinarian.[1] She is the third Bangladeshi after Dr. Mohammad Younus and Sir Fazle Hasan Abed in getting this award.[2] She is also listed in the top 100 Asian Scientists list for her work on Model Livestock Advancement Foundation. This list is published by Asian Scientist Magazine.[3]

Early Life and Education

Dr Salma graduated from Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University in 2010. Then, he went to India and started studying in Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. She got his masters degree in Pharmacology from CVASU in 2014.[2]

Career

After getting the graduation, she started his career as a veterinary officer in a community based veterinary foundation and spent 5 months there.[2] In 2014 she created Model Livestock Institute. Its an vocational livestock training institute for general farmers and entrepreneurs in Bangladesh. It was first of his kind in Bangladesh. Salma created an NGO named Model Livestock Advancement Foundation (MLAF) in 2015. This focuses on training, awareness, animal health care, empowering women, creating employment etc. She created two projects during the COVID-19 pandemic situation. One was providing food to the animal farmers. And the other is providing fresh poultry food to the customers which are tested in lab.[1] She also created a veterinary hospital named Model Livestock Institute Veterinary Hospital. This hospital created an online service called VetSheba. Any farmer can consult a doctor or an expert through this service.[4]
