Aliya Shagieva (born December 15, 1996, Bishkek) is an artist, graphic artist, and illustrator, renowned for her feminist stance in Kyrgyzstan.[1][2]

Family

[edit]

Aliya Shagieva was born in Bishkek on December 15, 1996 in the family of Almazbek Atambayev (in 2011 he will take the post of President of Kyrgyzstan) and Raisa Atambayeva (doctor, doctor of medical sciences).

She studied at school No. 29 in Bishkek. After graduating from school, she entered the Academy of Arts of the Kyrgyz Republic named after. T. Sadykova in 2013. Additionally, she received her education at the N. Roerich Art School in St. Petersburg.[1]

[edit]

In 2018, at the WORLD exhibition opening in Vienna, the "Flame of Peace" award was presented by Archduchess Hertha Margaret of Habsburg-Lothringen.[3]

In August 2023, the Kyrgyz National Museum of Fine Arts named after Gapar Aitiev in Bishkek hosted Aliya Shagieva's exhibition titled "Duality: Light, Darkness and what is in between".[4]

Aliya Shagieva is recognized as one of Kyrgyzstan's contemporary artists, whose work elicits public reactions.[5] Additionally, she is noted for her advocacy for feminist issues within Kyrgyzstan.[6][1]The BBC reported on Aliya Shagieva, highlighting her feminist position in a traditional Muslim society.[2]

Political Stance

[edit]

In September 2021, Shagieva was involved in a public artistic protest calling for the release of political prisoners in Kyrgyzstan.[7][8][9] The protest took place at Ala-Too square in Bishkek, near the White House, and was marked by the questioning of political activists by State security officers and a gathering of 500 individuals[10] at a nearby stadium to support the Interior Ministry in maintaining "public order." [11]The exhibition by Aliya Shagieva, which focused on political prisoners in Kyrgyzstan, took place in the country's main square and garnered media coverage.[7]

Shagieva is also noted for her support of opposition political movements. In 2019, during the raid on the opposition headquarters in Koi-Tash, she reported on the events through social media for various news platforms.[12][13]

Works and exhibitions

[edit]

In 2016, her first charity exhibition “Metamorphoses” was held in Bishkek.[14]

In October 2017, an exhibition of paintings by young artists Aigul Kasymova and Aliya Shagieva on the theme “Nomad” was opened at the Triptych gallery in Kyiv.[15][16]

In November 2019, a personal exhibition “Once upon the time” was held in Paris.[18]

On December 12, 2021, Aliya opened the House of Honesty, a creative workshop for children and adults.[19]
