  • Comment: There are no changes since the previous decline. One press release is not sufficient to demonstrate that this topic meets the notability criteria to have a Wikipedia article. The previous reviewer's suggestion to merge content to Area code 662 is a good one. You can revisit the possibility of area code 471 having its own article once it has been implemented and has more reliable sources. Mgp28 (talk) 16:24, 11 August 2024 (UTC)

Area code 471, in the northern and central parts of Mississippi.

Area code 471 is a planned telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the northern and central parts of the U.S. state of Mississippi. It is an overlay of Area code 662 and was approved by the Mississippi Public Service Commission on June 13, 2024.[1] The implementation of area code 471 is intended to address the anticipated exhaustion of numbering resources in the 662 area by the third quarter of 2026.

According to the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA), numbering resources for the 662 area code are anticipated to be exhausted by the third quarter of 2026. Existing 662 customers will keep their current telephone numbers, but new customers, or requests for additional lines, may be assigned the new 471 area code once it’s activated. Customers will continue to use ten-digit dialing — the area code plus the seven-digit phone number — to make local calls.

Implementation

[edit]

The 471 area code will be implemented using the overlay method, meaning it will cover the same geographic area as area code 662. This allows existing numbers to retain their 662 area code, while new numbers may be assigned the 471 area code. Customers will continue to use ten-digit dialing (area code + seven-digit number) for local calls.

Dialing Procedures

[edit]

With the introduction of area code 471, ten-digit dialing will be mandatory for all calls within the 662 and 471 areas to ensure proper call routing. Existing 662 customers will keep their current telephone numbers, but new customers or requests for additional lines may be assigned the new 471 area code once it’s activated.
