A graduate of the Royal Military College of Canada in Engineering, Brigadier-General Jennie Carignan was commissioned into the Canadian Military Engineers in 1990.
Carignan served as a peacekeeper in the [[United Nations Disengagement Observer Force]] in the [[Golan Heights]] in 1993. She was to be posted to the [[United Nations Protection Force]] in Bosnia in 1995 but had to withdraw after becoming pregnant.<ref name=maclean/> Carignan was promoted to major in 1999 and awarded a [[Master of Business Administration]] degree from [[Laval University]].<ref name=mil/> She also holds a degree from the [[United States Army Command and General Staff College]] and a master's degree in military arts and science from the US [[School of Advanced Military Studies]].<ref name=mil/> She deployed to Bosnia in 2002 to clear explosive ordnance from farmers' fields.<ref name=maclean/> Carignan was deputy commanding officer and acting commander of [[5 Combat Engineer Regiment]] from 2003 and was promoted to the rank of [[lieutenant-colonel]] in 2005.<ref name=mil/>

BGen Carignan earned a Master's degree from the United States Army Command and General Staff College and the School of Advanced Military Studies. She is a graduate of the National Security Studies Programme and earned a Master’s degree in business administration from Université Laval. BGen Carignan is the recipient of the Order of Military Merit and the Meritorious Service Medal. She was awarded the Major-General Hans Schlup Award for excellence in international relations as well as being ranked amongst Canada's 2011 top 100 most powerful women. She also received the prestigious Gloire de l'Escolle medal which recognizes graduates from Université Laval who have distinguished themselves professionally and in service to their communities.
