May 3rd Constitution Day

[edit]

In Anglophone countries such as the United States, the equivalent of the Polish "święto" is not "holiday" but simply "day" — e.g., "New Year's Day," "Martin Luther King Day," "Memorial Day," "Independence Day," "Labor Day," "Veterans Day," "Thanksgiving Day," "Christmas Day."

Thus the English equivalent of "Święto Konstytucji 3 Maja" would be "May 3rd Constitution Day."

"May 3 National Holiday," by comparison, is opaque in the extreme.

English-language equivalents of foreign terms are often paraphrastic rather than metaphrastic. Example: "Rzeczpospolita Obojga Narodów" is rendered in Wikipedia not literally (metaphrastically) as "Republic of the Two Nations" but descriptively (paraphrastically) as "Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth." Thank you, that seems convincing, so I moved the article to May 3rd Constitution Day.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 17:18, 12 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

B-class review comments/suggestions

[edit]

A very interesting article. I have a few comments and suggestions.

Infobox
  • The caption should say "the Constitution", not just "Constitution"
Background
  • Consider moving note [a] before the numbered footnotes
  • Consider adding 2010 to the photo caption
Celebrations
  • "this day, free from work": Is Constitution Day a paid holiday? Please clarify
  • List of dignitaries: consider using semi-colons to clarify (title, name; title, name; etc.)
  • "known as Polish Constitution Day": Try to clarify. Consider "The holiday has been a focal point of ethnic celebrations of Polish-American pride in the Chicago area, where it is known as Polish Constitution Day, since 1892."
  • "prominent guests nationwide": consider "guests of national stature"
  • "lobby": consider "ingratiate themselves with"
  • Kennedy doesn't seem to be mentioned in the sources
  • In general, the sources for the last paragraph are not of the same quality as the rest of the article
  • Consider adding 2007 to the photo caption

Thank you for the review, most issues done. Kennedy is mentioned in this ref: [1]. And yes, the sources for Polish-American issues are poor; I am however not seeing anything better. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 17:30, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
