34th Regiment & 34e Régiment

[edit]

"The greatest prize for the 34th [Cumberland] Regiment, (who harboured a long held ambition to take on their opposite French number) was the capture of six side-drums."

How do we know this?

In the absence of a source being cited, I have now excised this reference.JF42 (talk) 16:48, 29 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

"These magnificent trophies of war had been presented to the 34e Regiment d'Infanterie de Ligne by none other Napoleon himself when the French regiment was founded in 1796."

in 1796, Bonaparte was with the army of Italy. The 34e de Ligne did not exist. In 1796 a new 34e `demi-`brigade d'Infanterie de Ligne was formed and posted to the south of France. It wasn't until 1798 that 34e DB joined the Army of Italy. The 34e DB became the 34e Régiment de Ligne in 1803. How does the anecdote of Napoleon presenting drums to the 34th in 1796 fit with these facts? Is the correct date '1803'?
