Mountain or Plateau

[edit]

As far as I can tell, there is no particular peak with the name Ben Lomond - it seems to refer only to the entire plateau. Can point me to a peak with the name? Otherwise I'll change the terminology accordingly --Ozhiker (talk) 15:51, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think you are correct that the highest peak is not called Ben Lomond. The National Parks map (http://www.parks.tas.gov.au/natparks/benl/map.html) would seem to indicate that the highest peak is Legges Tor (http://www.geonames.org/2160394/legges-tor.html). According to http://wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn?s=ben however, Ben means mountain, so even tho the highest peak is called Legges Tor, it is still correct to call Ben Lomond a mountain. If anything it is a tautology to say "Ben Lomond is a mountain" as it is like saying "Mountain Lomond is a Mountain" --Lauchlin (talk) 00:56, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Do you think we should list the peaks on the mountain on the page or perhaps merge pages like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legges_Tor into the main Ben Lomond article? --Lauchlin (talk) 01:02, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There are historical reasons why Ben Lomond is a mountain without an eponymous peak. In colonial times up until the early 20th century 'Ben Lomond' referred mainly to the southern part of the plateau with 'the Butts (or Buttes) of Ben Lomond referring to Stacks Bluff. Ben Lomond also referred to the country about the southern part of the massif - hence 'John Batman of Ben Lomond'. When the individual peaks were renamed the name Ben Lomond came to refer to the entire massif, not just the southern end. Sean Parker (talk) 11:44, 4 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
