Boao vs. Bo'ao

[edit]

The official website uses Boao, but Bo'ao is correct. Page move? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 12:03, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I say why not? Official sources such as UNESCO may call 泰山 "Mount Taishan", but our article titles are of course not always in line with them, particularly in those incorrect cases. GotR Talk 23:25, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. If it's correct, it's correct. So, I guess that's two "supports" because I'm in favour too.
On the same note, what of this? Google shows the apostrophe half the time. I think with apostrophe is right. Can no apostrophe be right? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:23, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
According to pinyin orthography rules, "Ao" starts with 'a', so an apostrophe must precede it. A lot of people don't know this rule, so they assume you need the apostrophe only if confusion might result otherwise (Chang-'an or Chan-gan). The apostrophe in Bo'ao is technically necessary, but wouldn't introduce any ambiguity if omitted. But some sources probably just have a rule against using such apostrophes or carelessly omit it.
