Number of members

[edit]

A previous version [1] stated that there were more than 50 members, and in fact there are 55 members listed (all of whom played on the album Septober Energy). It's possible that Allmusic uses the number 50 because they're not counting the 5 vocalists on the album, but I see no reason to exclude them from membership. So this could be changed to indicate that there were more than 50 members, or that there were 50 musicians and 5 vocalists, to be more specific.—Offenbach (talk) 19:35, 22 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to say that Centipede had more than 50 members, but all the references I've found say it was 50 ([2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7]). My understanding is that Centipede had 50 members at their debut performance at the Lyceum, and that later 55 musicians were used to record the album. --Bruce1eetalk 05:59, 23 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think there's a conflict here, necessarily. All of your sources refer to a "50-piece orchestra," and the interview with Tippett says "there were fifty musicians involved." If the five vocalists aren't considered "musicians" of the "50-piece" orchestra, then the album credits fit the sources. But the five vocalists might still be considered members of the group even if they were not "musicians" per se.
In the liner notes to the album [8], there's a group photo with everybody, and the list of "Centipede personnel" includes the 5 vocalists with no indication that their membership status was treated any differently from the 50 musicians. —Offenbach (talk) 16:11, 23 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I take your point. I've adjusted the article lead to say "with more than 50 members". Thanks for pointing this out. --Bruce1eetalk 07:11, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
