Highway Cost

[edit]

This article states that the most expensive mile of freeway constructed was part of the X bronx expressway. does this remain true after the completion of the "big dig"?

Double Decker Freeway Source

[edit]

On www.nycroads.com/cross-bronx, Steve Anderson mentions that there were proposals to add a second deck to the expressway in the open trenched sections. The upper level would carry truck priority lanes. -JGCarter

Weird Edit Removed

[edit]

I removed some strange edit that was put up yesterday. You can check the diff yourself, but it was poorly written, contained lots of typos and some incomprehensible abbreviations, and alluded to the danger to the expressway's bridges from a terrorist attack. I have no idea, but the person who edited it has no profile and has made only the one edit.

Btw, I think "necessary evil" is appropriate. The CBE is the only way of getting from Northern New Jersey to Long Island, by truck/bus/other commercial vehicle, that is. Otherwise, you'd have to go down to Staten Island, take the Verrazano, then the BQE up to the LIE (or god help you, go through Manhattan in some fashion). God damn Moses for building all of the bridges over the parkways only tall enough for cars, and god damn him for tearing up neighborhoods to do so (oh, and not putting a train line along the LIE, or putting a subway under the Van Wyck, and ruining the waterfronts on both the Hudson and the East River). Okay, enough editorializing. Zweifel 12:52, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Zweifel is so wrong about this. I lived in the neighborhood at the western end of the CBE as a child and worked there as an adult. The CBE is definitely not the only way to get from Northern NJ to Long Island. NJ, Staten Island? Verrazano Bridge (completed in 1964 after the CBE was already finished)?? BQE? etc?? Smoking something funny perhaps? We went over the GW Bridge into Manhattan then over the Little Washington Bridge (at 181st St in Manhattan) into the Bronx and east all the way locally to the Whitestone Bridge to LI. And as for the "Power Broker"- I would like the author to tell or show me the (one?) "viable" street one block south that could have been used for the CBE on a map. I've lived in the Bronx my entire life and I cannot imagine what he is talking about.Dcrasno (talk) 17:29, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Necessary evil? NPOV?

[edit]

I have a problem with calling this "necessary" and "evil." First of all, the necessity of the road is dubious. Anyone who has read The Power Broker knows of popular opinion that any road deemed "necessary" just creates necessity someplace else for another road, which brings into question the discrete necessity for any one road. Furthermore, this road in this place was far from necessary.

"Evil" is not NPOV, even in this colloquial figure of speech sense. Franklin Bynum 19:23, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Also, it carries I-95 through NY. It is a nessasary evil -JGCarter
Normally I would agree about the 'necessary evil' part, but in this case it's as fitting as springtime snowmelt..and several million New Yorkers, Jersey People and countless truckers would agree. -PhPh
Can someone get a citation on, "It is not unusual to hear news stories of carjackings and robberies along this notorious stretch of roadway." That sounds a little uh, made-up.
I agree. Oh, and dont forget to sign your posts Jgcarter 15:42, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This article is a bit inaccurate and misleading

[edit]

My understanding is that the most expensive section of freeway ever built in the United States was either the Century Freeway in Los Angeles (at $2.2 billion for 17 miles of freeway) or the Cypress Viaduct replacement in Oakland ($1.2 billion to replace 1.5 miles of freeway with a longer 2.4 mile route that crossed the same BART line twice and had to squeeze between a rail yard, an army base, a naval supply center, a sewage plant, and a post office). It sounds like as if the writer meant that the Cross-Bronx had the most expensive mile of freeway ever built at the time. --Coolcaesar 00:27, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

redundant exit list

[edit]

I don't believe there is a definite agreement on how to treat this but I think we should decide on whether we should have multiple copies of the same exits on different articles like Cross Bronx Expressway and I-95 in New York. In this particular case, since the numbering is based on I-95 rather than the Cross Bronx, it is better to not include the exit list here since it is already included somewhere else. Where to include the exit list should be based on the numbering scheme followed. --Polaron | Talk 13:03, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's helpful to give an exit list for people interested in the Cross Bronx, especially because of the switching from I-95 to I-295. --NE2 13:06, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

History

[edit]

The history section as it is right now is weird - it appears to contain the same information twice, but with one "presentation" inline referenced and one generically attributed to NYCRoads. – TMF 02:50, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

General of Burma Road

[edit]

Lewis A. Pick's biography doesn't mention any work in New York. If no reference can be found for his saying something about this highway, or some other US Army engineering officer of high rank who worked the Burma connections, I don't see a reason to keep the comparison in the article. Henry Hudson Parkway

[edit]
As an option to using the Cross Bronx Expressway to accessing the George Washington Bridge from the north, many car services and chauffeur services recommend using the Cross County Parkway, which merges into the Sawmill Parkway and then the Henry Hudson Parkway. According to industry experts, this route bypasses much of the Bronx bound traffic found on the Cross Bronx Expressway.

So true. And a much nicer route. Riverdale is beautiful compared with the craphole landscape around 95, and the Cross County Parkway at least isn't a traffic nightmare.

But seriously, is this encyclopedic? Maybe I'm speaking from the perspective of someone who doesn't want the Henry Hudson and the Cross County to get as trafficy as the Cross Bronx, but I honestly think that Wikipedia isn't the place for traffic tips. P.S.
I removed the reference (formerly number 22) that was the citation for this paragraph, since it linked to a dead website. Check for yourself, here is where the link went: http://www.idriveyourcar.com/blog/?p=47
The website it linked to isn't even a good source; idriveyourcar.com is a commercial website for a chauffeur service.
I'll come back in about a week to remove this paragraph if nobody objects. Inasilentway (talk) 06:00, 13 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
