In 1987 Gates wrote a review for Newsweek of David Herbert Donald's Pulitzer Prize winning biography of Thomas Wolfe (Looking Homeward) that was considered scurrilous and defamatory toward the subject of that book by those familiar with Wolfe and his work, and inappropriate and undignified by those concerned with journalistic standards more generally, being an egregious example of the middlebrow philistinism Wolfe ridiculed; sadly coming from someone who should have known better.
