Alfred Wall vs. Alfred M. Wall

[edit]

They appear to be two different people, I first thought father/son, but the links go to the same guy. Yet on his page it says that he was only secretary from 30-31, so it doesn't make sense. Can someone research and clarify this, please? Jimindc (talk) 14:59, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

General Secretary

[edit]

The current general sec of Equity, Christine Payne, is a neighbour - Perhaps, given the woefullness of this stub, I should ask her if she knows about wikipedia and whether she'd mind making some contributions? In the meantime, I'm sure there's plenty of information that could be added which is directly sourced from their website and annual report. --»»» M ª ««« 18:31, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Is Equity

[edit]
  • now the ankur mishra formal name of the former British Actors' Equity Association, or
  • simply the common short name of an organization that is still officially called the British Actors' Equity Association?

-- The Anome It is now the formal name of the union. Does anyone know how many members it has, and what it's history of membership figures is? add some good discription of equity..(by ankur mishra)

Closed shop

[edit]

Why is Equity still allowed to operate as a closed shop? Unlike, say, gas engineers there isn't a safety reason to compel membership, so how do they get around the law that outlaws closed shops in the UK? 86.136.252.25 09:09, 23 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It isn't anymore.--Windy906 20:43, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The 'Criticism' section isn't very clear on this. The first pargarph says "until the 1980s" implying that the situation has now changed, while the second one talks as if this criticism has never been accurate, and gives no suggestion of a subsequent change. Which is correct?--MartinUK (talk) 16:21, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the criticsm section has vanished, but there is this statement "British Equity's approval is needed to bring an American actor to London", which still makes it sound closed shop to me - if it isn't then why is their approval needed? Riedquat (talk) 23:11, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Alien dues

[edit]

US Equity was forced to stop charging aliens 5% of their US income as dues on the basis that it was discriminatory. British Equity did the same, claiming it was a form of retaliation. Does anyone know whether British Equity also stopped the practice? JohnClarknew (talk) 18:03, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

So Equity is in fact open to foreign nationals? The reason I ask is that on British TV dramas, American and French people (and foreigners generally) are usually played by British actors, often with appalling results; and I've often wondered what stopped the producers from hiring a native speaker with good English. The latter clearly happens occasionally, as witness Elizabeth McGovern on Downton Abbey. But why not in The Forsyte Saga, or the Pallisers, or dozens of other programmes?
Has Hercule Poirot ever actually been played by a Belgian? Paul Magnussen (talk) 17:50, 9 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I thought that Belgium was a fictional country created by Agatha Christie to keep David Suchet in work? KingStrato (talk) 08:21, 11 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Same Name

[edit]

I thought I remembered reading that the same name for two members rule had been revoked? I can't seem to find anything to back this up right now, so I've left it as is. If Equity have changed their rules, a number of Wikis will need to have tenses changed in some sentences (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Skinner for example). 89.218.74.104 (talk) 21:37, 1 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Equity's website still lists that you must have an individual professional name. BillyH 20:59, 8 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
