"progressive grooves"?

[edit]

This may be a completely different concept, but I find this term confusing, because the "progressive rifling" (aka "gain twist") that I'm familiar with has nothing to do with the depth of the rifling. Rather it is a progression in the rate of spin, starting at a mild rate and increasing as the bullet moves down the bore, as a way to more gently impart spin to the projectile. I'm just worried that whoever wrote that passage was, in fact, talking about your typical "progressive rifling", and was simply confused as to how it works, and thus gave an inaccurate description on this page. If there ARE two totally different methods, it ought to mention the fact, to ensure that people don't get the two concepts mixed up, or credit the wrong person with coming up with the idea..45Colt 03:21, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
