Francis Blair father of Montgomery Blair, elder Blair relayed Lincoln's April 17 offer to Lee to Command Union Army

[edit]

Francis Blair was father of Montgomery Blair, a member of President Lincoln's cabinet. The elder Blair took it upon himself to advise Lincoln. On April 17, 1861, just three days after the surrender of Fort Sumter, Lincoln asked Francis Blair to convey his offer to Colonel Robert E. Lee to command the Federal Army. The next day, Lee visited Blair across Lafayette Square from the White House. Lee blunted Blair’s offer of the Union command by saying: “Mr. Blair, I look upon secession as anarchy. If I owned the four millions of slaves at the South, I would sacrifice them all to the Union; but how can I draw my sword upon Virginia, my native State?”[ref] http://www.mrlincolnswhitehouse.org/inside.asp?ID=663&subjectID=2 [/ref] - Brad Watson, Miami 71.196.11.183 (talk) 19:24, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Lede too short (again)

[edit]

I contributed a new extended lede on 18/5/15, in response to a tag stating (correctly) that the lede was too short. On 16/3/16, Taterian transferred the new material elsewhere, leaving the lede, once again, too short, both for the length of the article and for the notability of the subject. I won’t revert yet, but perhaps a neutral judge may like to give a verdict. Valetude (talk) 22:44, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
