Captain

http://buperscd.technology.navy.mil/bup_updt/upd_CD/BUPERS/Register/naval_register.html lists Brindel, Glenn Richard as retiring as a Captain October 2 1990 with a date of rank of January 1 1987. That doesn't seem to track with the New York Times ref I used which said he retired at Commander due to lack of time in grade. Does anyone have anyone have any other sources on this? --Dual Freq (talk) 03:29, 1 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Reason for discharge

Medals

What is the source for listing the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal and Vietnam Cross of Gallantry as having been awarded to Brindle? Getty Image photos of Brindle in 1987 do not show these awards. He has one Navy Commendation Medal and one Navy Achievement Medal. Wcswett2 (talk) 21:41, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Here is one source, Commander has 22-year Career, by Associated Press. The Spokesman-Review. Spokane, WA. p. A3. May 19, 1987. Getty Images pictures show Brindle in his summer white uniform with all his awards. There's no Bronze Star and no Meritorious Service Medal, so AP got it wrong and the error has been referenced multiple times. I was on temporary duty under Brindle once in 1986 and a second time in early May 1987 and I can bear witness that he had neither award. In fact, I was surprised that he had so few personal awards for his rank. Just search Getty Images with "USS Stark" and you will see several pictures of Brindle in his whites. I think we will probably have to wait for a published source to overrule the other published sources. It's likely to be considered original research to try to base it on a photo. Maybe a FOIA request would work, but I don't know if someone can do a FOIA record request on a living person. --Dual Freq (talk) 21:24, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Brindle's DD-214 form issued upon his retirement will list all of his awards, but I don't think that's subject to an FOIA. A letter to the Bureau of Naval Personnel asking for verification of the AP story might get a reply, but I think I've done as much as I care to do. I've pointed out that the Wikipedia entry has an error and have pointed to an indisputable source for the correct information. I think the best thing to do is to delete the sentence listing his awards, which I've tried to do and been reversed. I'm lead writer for "The Stark Incident" movie and will make sure the correct awards appear on the actor's uniform as they were in the news conference following the attack.
