It is not clear when the company was first founded. FVW Medien claims foundation in 1974 by Nikos Daskalantonakis, but this is incorrect. In fact it was the brothers Nikos and Takis Daskalantonakis who built their first hotel in Crete in 1974 (opened 1976), but their company was not Grecotel. According to the much more accurate Kathimerini article, the two brothers built a few hotels in Crete and then bought 50% of the (pre-existing) Grecotel chain from Dimitris Pierides in 1981. TUI Group in 1986 also bought 50%. So I assume that Grecotel was a business founded by Pierides at an unknown time, and Pierides sold one half to the Daskalantonakis brothers in 1981, and the other half to TUI in 1986, presumably retiring at this point. But I have not been able to find any trace of Grecotel as a company existing prior to 1981 so far.

It was presumably established before 1973, as I find that the Grecotel resort in Sounio was built in 1973[1] (this doesn't prove Grecotel predates 1973, as the hotel may conceivably have been acquired by Grecotel later, but it is at least plausible that Grecotel was founded already in the 1960s) --dab (𒁳) 16:44, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
