Alt Right Extremist Horror House

[edit]

According to this article...

A Alt Right Extremist Horror House is a simulated torture house that uses graphic violence and hate symbols to shock and convey a political message to guests. These types of experiences are a growing trend in America and often they happen in rural areas of states and sometimes cities. These experiences are political in nature and involve mostly women being tortured for entertainment, but often people of color are targets as well as Jewish and Muslim men and women. Some shows are based off right wing conspiracies and others are just torture chambers fueled by misogyny, racism, sexism, ableism and hate. McKamey Manor is said to have started this trend.

I did a bit of googling, and couldn't find anything about it being linked to the alt-right movement. Are there any other examples of this movement besides McKamey Manor? A lot of this seems like original research to me... What do you think? Margalob (talk) 18:06, 2 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This section lacks sources. It can safely be removed. Dimadick (talk) 11:45, 7 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed Edits & Additional Information

[edit]

During the non-profit era of haunted houses (1970s-1980s) the March of Dimes was also a major player. Some references are made here: Skal, David J. Halloween: The History of America’s Darkest Holiday. Dover Publications (June 20, 2016) Oddjob84 (talk) 07:30, 13 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Here's an example that was still open in 1989: Deseret News Sept. 21, 1989 Oddjob84 (talk) 07:33, 13 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Same house, 1991: Deseret News Nov. 28, 1991
Same locale, review of all houses, including MOD (1990): Deseret News Oct. 10, 1990
Here's one open for 22 years, to the present (MOD): Spooky Acres
Here's a MOD house from 1976: Desert Sun, 8 October 1976
One from Hawaii, MOD house 1997: Star Bulletin October 30, 1997
What I am not finding, is exactly when the national MOD suggested to its chapters that they run haunted houses as fundraisers. That would define the beginning of this phase of the non-profit era. Oddjob84 (talk) 16:14, 13 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have been looking into the "Origins" paragraph, and have found a good deal of information which ought to be included, but is absent. I am undertaking a re-write of this section. If anyone has any suggestions or comments, please leave them here. I will post an update before changing the article. Oddjob84 (talk) 13:58, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Here is my first pass at revising the "Origins" section. Note I have renamed it "History". The existing text from the "Origins" section of the Article has been preserved. Comments and suggestions welcome. Oddjob84 (talk) 13:59, 21 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

As there has been no discussion for five days, I am moving the revision to the Article Space. If you have comments, please make them here first. Oddjob84 (talk) 23:40, 25 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Added more text for consideration below. Oddjob84 (talk) 14:11, 28 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
No comments, moved to Article. Draft cleared. Oddjob84 (talk) 13:44, 30 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Remaining tasks: find pictures & graphics; write "international perspective" paragraph; draw distinction among charity houses, professional houses, and mega-houses/events (eg. Halloween Horror Nights). Oddjob84 (talk) 14:01, 30 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

In the section Business Environment this sentence appears: "Attractions are covered by industry trade magazines including Hauntworld Magazine, Haunted Attraction Magazine, and Fangoria." There is a bit of a problem with this statement. Fangoria does not seem to cover Haunted Attractions at all. Movies, TV, games, yes, but no attractions. The other two suffer from "the elephant in the room" problem. They specifically do not mention the big-league attractions (not that they need any help), but their editorial policy comes into question when their list of "top 31 haunts in America" only includes their trade group members. I'm not suggesting removing mention, as the independent professional attractions deserve a voice, but I think some caveat is in order. Fangoria, on the other hand, does not seem on point. I placed that banner there to point up what I thought was the section that needed the most help as mentioned elsewhere. If you don't agree, leave it, I won't put it back.  — Myk Streja (what?) 02:43, 9 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I did not agree with the placement of that particular banner, as stated in the edit summary: "deleted banner, covered by banner above, neither "personal reflection" nor "opinion essay" applies)". The banner I left covers the need for some work. Oddjob84 (talk) 12:33, 9 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Lists in Article

[edit]

We have begun placing lists in the article. These lists do not exist elsewhere on Wikipedia. Please note they are each specific topics, not just general lists of any simulated haunted attraction. Editors are asked to observe the conventions specific to each list. If you do not find a list for your specific attraction, feel free to add it under the correct heading or ask for it here. Important Note: If you add a haunt to a list, please observe notability. If the listing has a Wikipedia page, it is assumed notable. If it does not have an existing Wikipedia page, you must provide a reference in the "source" column.

The first list placed is for Haunted theme parks, and its conventions are as follows:

  • Notability: Must be international, national or at least substantially regional
  • Scale: Must involve substantial portion or entire park, multiple venues; single attractions not included
  • Seasonal: Must be ad hoc event, run seasonally, not permanent attraction
  • Theme: Strictly Halloween/horror theme, harvest festivals, etc. not included

Second list: Simulated Haunted Houses/Mansions/Castles (year around), with its conventions:

  • Notability: Must be international, national or at least substantially regional
  • Scale: Single attractions only
  • Seasonal: Must be a permanent attraction, open when its park is open
  • Theme: Strictly Halloween-like theme, "fun houses" not included

Third list: Simulated Haunted Houses/Mansions/Castles (seasonal), with its conventions:

  • Notability: Must be international, national or at least substantially regional
  • Scale: Single attractions only
  • Seasonal: Must be ad hoc event, run seasonally, may be permanent location
  • Theme: Strictly Halloween-like theme, "fun houses" not included

Fourth list: Dark Rides is a link in this article, which directs back to the Dark Ride main article.

Edits to Tables

[edit]

All Editors wishing to add entries: You are certainly welcome to contribute to this page. However, in the future, please do the following: 1) Read the rules for each table. It is easy to place your entry in the wrong table. 2) Please do not delete existing entries to add new ones. Each table has blanks for new entries at the bottom. 3) Please place a reference for your new entry, to prove notability. 4) If you are unfamiliar with editing tables, please ask for help, or leave a note on this talk page. I will be happy to help. Oddjob84 (talk) 00:05, 22 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I don't understand the use of the word "covering" here. I would change it to something like "visiting," but it might have a meaning that I'm not aware of.... PurpleChez (talk) 20:25, 23 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You're right, it doesn't make a bit of sense.Oddjob84 (talk) 00:32, 24 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
