[edit]

The enormous number of redlinks on this list points to the fact that we have very poor covereage of biographical articles on scientists all over the world but particularly in Australia. I think it likely that all fellows of the Academy could have articles as sources are likely to be available. --Bduke 23:11, 27 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Two tables?

[edit]

I suggest that keeping the Corresponding Members in a separate table would have the following advantages:

  • Make it easier to select only Australian scientists (Fellows) from the whole group.
  • Enable marking a member of either type, whether Fellow or Corresponding Member, as Deceased without losing info as to their type.

Alternatively, the notation "Deceased" could occur in an extra column to the right of the (unlabelled) Type column; but this would make the table wider, and therefore more poorly displayed, on smaller screens such as mobile computing devices and phones.

I think you'll find the majority of the Corresponding Fellows either are or were Australian scientists - e.g. both Terry Tao and Rod Brooks grew up in Adelaide - so that field doesn't help "select only Australian scientists".
Considering your comments, I came to the conclusion that, because the table contains a column for year-of-death, then we don't need a separate "deceased" column, and the current members can be identified by sorting by year-of-death. So thanks, for the good idea. Pdfpdf (talk) 11:58, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yes - having two tables undoes the advantages of having one sortable list. I don't think two tables is a good idea. Pdfpdf (talk) 11:58, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Scarcely informative

[edit]

There is no discernible logic to the default sort order of the table of Fellows. Surely it would make more sense to have it sorted either by date of election (tho' there are ties) or alphabetically by surname followed by given names? yoyo (talk) 04:12, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Given that you can sort the table any number of ways with the click of a button, why does it matter what the default sort order is?
But in response to your comments - there is, in fact, a discernible logic - a rather obscure one, but never-the-less, discernable.
But in response to your comments, the table is now in sort by "Refs" column, by year-of-election, by surname. Pdfpdf (talk) 12:08, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Like the previous editor, I also find it remarkable how little information is available on Wikipedia about these Fellows, all scientists distinguished by their very presence in this list; even to the point that many wikilinked Fellows have no birth date given! The concise kind of info given in some of the Notes is exactly what we need for quickly finding, say, all mathematicians or plant geneticists. yoyo (talk) 04:12, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. Pdfpdf (talk) 12:08, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Can anybody please tell me how to set up a project to improve (the information value of) this article, and invite contributors to it? yoyo (talk) 04:12, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, not something I know anything about. You could always add a {{Help me}} tag ... Pdfpdf (talk) 12:08, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
