Why are these names in Pinyin Transcription? Pinyin Transcription means the Tibetan names have been transcribed from Tibetan to Chinese characters and then into English. The phonetics of the chinses language and the absence of diacritics does not allow for a phonetically correct transliteration of Tibetan; the place names are sometimes greatly different from the name by which the place is referred to by those living there.

So we have an illogically contived transliteration that is not used on the ground. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.111.119.42 (talk) 09:10, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wylie-Transcriptions

[edit]

As long as the toponyms are not indicated as well in the Wylie-transcription which is mostly used by western authors, this list is fairly useless for western readers and research fellows. Clemensmarabu (talk) 11:06, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Just as is the case for the United States any substantial settlement should be listed together with ALL alternative names, including Tibetan and Chinese, county and coordinates. Due to the resettlement of rural Tibetans into towns located on roads there are many new and unlisted towns. They can be spotted on Google satellite views by the new rectangular housing blocks and their location on roads. User:Fred Bauder Talk 13:19, 29 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup

[edit]

While it was wishful thinking to want to have articles on every village, they were mostly created at a time when only databases like falling rain existed, which as we know contains gross errors with population and often errors in altitude and locations. Given that we now at least have Chinese coverage of township level divisions I think the best thing to do for now is to redirect our short stubs which aren't designated towns to here and aim to work on getting the township articles all consistent (ideally start class with some sourced info) and the remaining ones started. Each township should then have sections on the villages within them, those would be the best place for minor details. Eventually I think this article should have a list of major towns in population order and a tabled list by county with population and coordinates should they ever become available for all villages. There's still a huge number of place names missing, you only have to look on Google Earth to see that. But I think this is the best approach, and to hopefully get the most notable settlements up to scatch first.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:14, 18 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that many if not all of the redirects to this list do have a Wikidata entry - in my eyes this seems to be unwanted. One example only: Tarmar (Q7686347)... --katpatuka (talk) 09:45, 20 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
