Basilica minorMinor basilica — per WP:USEENGLISH. The latinate word order of the current title is incorrect English usage. --oknazevad (talk) 19:35, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

What is a minor basilica?

[edit]

The article doesn't say. Is it a smaller form of the Major Basilica, in terms of function or significance? How does it differ from a mere church? A cathedral is defined as the church housing the seat of a bishop, but what's the definition of a minor basilica? --64.118.218.181 (talk) 23:31, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It is a title granted by the Church to a church building. A minor basilica is a non-major basilica. What more do you need to know? Elizium23 (talk) 01:09, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Math

[edit]

1609 total minor basilicas = 3 papal minor basilicas + 4 pontifical minor basilicas + 1576 minor basilicas (general)? That doesn't add up. Nor does either figure match the 1584 minor basilicas said to be in existence as of 31 December 2008. Is something missing here? --Khajidha (talk) 01:01, 25 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Done. I have reconciled the number with what is currently listed at gcatholic.org as a 2013 figure. I have also tagged all gcatholic.org links as {{unreliable source}}. I do not believe that gcatholic.org has editorial oversight or a reputation for fact-checking. I think it draws much information from catholic-hierarchy.org, which is known to be WP:USERG and not reliable for many of the things it's cited for.
