Clarity of text

[edit]

I find this article quite difficult to follow. Can anyone who is familiar with the topic help to make the story plainer?

I'm sure all these things are blindingly obvious to local people, but the article needs to be written for people who don't already know the subject.

The "BG&HR [was to] build the line from Gateshead to the Derwent". The wikilink is to the River Derwent which is a long river, and the link is no help in working out where that was.

Gateshead is referenced in the text a lot, but not referred to in the ugly route diagram. Is everything in the conurbation south of the Tyne "Gateshead"? Or is Redheugh considered to be in Newcastle? There was an extension from Redheugh to Gateshead, so I presume Redheugh isn't in Gateshead.

"The eastern section between Blaydon and Heydon" ... is that just a typo for Haydon Bridge, or a different place?

A branch was opened in 1839 to Newcastle. How can a line to Newcastle be a branch of the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway?

In the early 1840s there was a branch to Redheugh. Redheugh is clearly on the main line on the diagram; is this a different line, or what?

Coke was made on the Redhaugh branch. Is that a typo for Redheugh, and if so is it the branch or the main line?

When Central station first opened its only access was from the east. How did trains get there? From Redheugh? I thought Redheugh was at the low level. Was there a connection to the High Level Bridge?

I have had a shot at improving those points. Afterbrunel (talk) 06:21, 29 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
