Brodsky Papers

[edit]

There are many letters and other things to do with Nováček at the UK National Archives' Brodsky Papers (he was a member of the Brodsky Quartet and a good friend of Adolph Brodsky, Ferruccio Busoni etc.) From this information (online) one sees/guesses he wrote the 3rd quartet (in C, score @ IMSLP, parts @ NYPL and in Australia (at Sydney) but not widely dispersed- have been trying to Lilypond-typeset parts of the quartet from the score but am running into trouble properly paginating the 1st movement for performance, 2nd and 4th movements done though) around 1898-99 perhaps- and a concert announcement for Chicago's Kneisel Quartet @ Google Books mentions an upcoming performance in 1902, from manuscript (I'm guessing that would have been the premiere - I know of no earlier performance of the C major quartet. There were performances during Nováček's lifetime - hence, <1900 - of the first two quartets (E minor ohne op., E major Op.10), according to notices in the Musical Times etc.) Busoni performed in several places (premiered, I believe...- dedicatee, also?- need to double-check) around 1896 or so (and later?), the composer's Concerto Eroico.
