Bandpass filter image

[edit]

Thanks Jhbdel for the improvements, but I agree with Spinningspark: File:Passband schematic2.svg is not suitable because the cross hatching is ugly and distracts attention from the point of the image. File:Passband schematic.svg is better. I haven't done anything about this because I think the image has a more fundamental problem: a box labeled "High Pass Filter" crossing out the low frequencies is not clear to anyone who needs to read this article. I don't have time to ponder this atm, but I suspect the HPF label should be replaced with "Low frequencies" (note the lowercase "f"), and the LPF label should be replaced with "High frequencies". Then a caption could say something like "A high pass filter removes the low frequencies, while a low pass filter removes the high frequencies. A bandpass filter removes both the high and low frequencies." Or, perhaps the caption could just be the last sentence. BTW, if replacing the image, just upload a new version to the existing title (there is no need to unused images as a separate file). Johnuniq (talk) 01:42, 26 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to second the thanks to Jhbdel, especially as my message on their talk page was a little on the tetchy side. I had not considered the hatching was meant to represent crossing out, it would probably be ok if it were greyed out a bit, or the hatching lines were thin, more like a regular tech drawing. I think the HPF and LPF labels are ok, this ties up with the description in the text. A few other improvements, the hatching in both sections should go the same way, there is a strong visual effect from the opposite directions; the HPF and LPF boxes need internal padding; it might be better to show the filter responses with a more realistic roll-off, could even have a second chart underneath the first with the result of the filtering on the signal; the vertical legend X(f) needs to be explained (arbitrary function of frequency?) or changed to something more easily understandable such as "gain". I can make these changes if agreed, but lets wait to hear from Jhdbel first. SpinningSpark 08:44, 26 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
