Some additions

[edit]

A great topic, which deserves fleshing out. I've made a start but I'm sure others can improve on what I have done. Sorry, but my footnoting never works. I wish Wikipedia could simplify the process - perhaps that's why so many people don't bother. But the sources are contained in the external links that I've added.

I've included some more information about the Americans who died on the hulks and where the ships were anchored. (The statement about the death toll which someone thought needed confirmation is correct; figures are inexact but the consensus seems to be that 7000-8000 Americans died in battle in the War of Independence.)

I've also added some material about penal trasportation and the juveniles detained in hulks in Australia. The name of Abel Magwitch has also been included.

Maybe the whole item could be better structured.
