Birthplace

[edit]

Copied from our talk pages as per History Lunatic's suggestion. -- Analog Kid (talk) 12:37, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Regarding Pertwee's birthplace, a birthplace should be listed as it was named on the date of birth. You may add a line saying "(now known as Hove)" or "(now part of Hove)" to list the place's current name. For instance, if someone was born in Czechoslovakia we would still list their birthplace as Czechoslovakia even though the country no longer exists. The same would apply to a town that has changed hands; if a town was part of Germany on the date of birth, it would still be listed as part of Germany even if the town is currently part of France. Please correct your edit accordingly. Cheers! History Lunatic (talk) 22:10, 15 September 2018 (UTC)History Lunatic[reply]

Hi there. I did a Google lookup of West Brighton before editing Mr Pertwee's entry. From the sites I saw on the first two or three pages it appears that it was known locally as the West Brighton estate, but the name didn't appear on any official maps. The sole use of it looks to be when the Cliftonville railway station was renamed to it during 1879-1895 before becoming Hove station. At the time of being built, Hove was considered the poorer relation and it looks like the owners wanted the estate to be associated with the "more fashionable Brighton" regardless of where it was. I've checked a few old maps for the time period and can't see the name myself. This one is for close to the time period in question, as you can see the estate is very much part of Hove. I'm open to renaming the entry if necessary, I'd just like to get your take on this first. The evidence says to me Hove, but of course YMMV. -- Analog Kid (talk) 00:49, 16 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It's really nice to see someone take the time to do proper research! From the details you gave, I agree the entry should read "Hove." To reduce confusion you might add something like "(West Brighton estates)" to prevent a lot of back and forth edits when others find it listed that way. Or copy this discussion to the Talk page of the article. Cheers! ~History Lunatic — Preceding unsigned comment added by History Lunatic (talkcontribs) 17:40, 16 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
