HOW : TO GUIDES

[edit]

And - Do read the pages with the instructions, which ever ones you choose or if people point you to specific pages. There is useful information on them and they are helpful. If there is content you don't understand on them, just ask.

Why to Edit

[edit]
Mind the Gap

Why does it matter that we edit Wikipedia to include women who work in genre fields- or any POC or marginalised group? Does it matter that these people edit Wikipedia?

Help to Edit

[edit]

Create an Account

[edit]

Are you ready to create a Wikipedia account, so you can keep track of articles in a watch list, customize your reading and editing preferences, and communicate with other Wikipedia volunteers about improving articles that interest you? GREAT!

Your first big decision will be choosing a username.

In addition, you may need to consider whether your preferred name would violate Wikipedia's policy on usernames; for instance, if it might be considered deceptive, promotional, offensive, etc. Please reference the Username policy if relevant.

Whenever you're ready…

Creating articles and information

[edit]

If you'd like to edit Wikipedia, you definitely should! It's a lot easier than most people expect. To help you to edit:

There are tutorials

And pages with details

Here below are some useful guides you may want to keep around:

Ways to edit

[edit]

Sometimes it seems like the high profile way to be involved with Wikipedia is as an article creator but really there are many other ways to edit. A humorous way of seeing the different ways to be involved is by reading Wikipedia:WikiFauna. Basically these break down the various ways to be involved into classifications. Reality is that everyone does a little of everything but we all have our preferences. Perhaps you prefer to work on the IT side, or as a proof reader, perhaps you want to work to improve the basic policies or to deal with vandals. What ever you are interested in, or however much time you have to spend on the Wikipedia, there is a way for you to help.

Editing suggestions

[edit]

User:SuggestBot This bot will give you pages which need some kind of attention for you to edit.

But if you would prefer to get involved in specific topics and help out with issues arising there - take a look at that topic and see if it has a project page like

  1. Wikipedia:WikiProject Ireland ---> here is the list of Ireland articles needing clean up
  2. Wikipedia:Irish Wikipedians' notice board
  3. Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red ---> Turning an article into a Good article Wikipedia:WikiProject Women/Women in Green
  4. Wikipedia:WikiProject Women writers
  5. Portal:Speculative fiction/Science fiction (Wikipedia:WikiProject Science Fiction)
  6. Portal:LGBT
  7. Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors

There will be articles which need review, copy editing, improvement, citations, etc all waiting there for someone with the skills to help. Some editors will have put tags on articles identifying what the area needing attention is. So if you don't want to create articles (and certainly I started with maintenance tasks to learn how to edit and what the policies were) you are needed to review new pages, fix spelling and grammar errors, assist with translation requests, fix unreferenced statements, fix original research, fight vandalism, help with link recovery, categorization, and all the many other behind the scenes activities that improve the articles.

And of course Wikipedia is only one of the Wikis that can use your help.

Article creation

[edit]

When you are ready to try creating your first article, you can get help, advice and propose it as a draft which someone will review for you using the Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation

If you don't want to create an article but you are familiar with what is needed and what will be accepted, you can go there and review other people's drafts. There is usually a backlog.

REQUEST FOR HELP

[edit]

Adding to lists

[edit]

When people search Wikipedia for information sometimes they want a list- the list of violinist, a list of women in SFF, who died today, what famous think happened today. My list held here : User:Antiqueight/Pages#Full List gives the year of birth and death where known. All it needs is for the page about the person to be opened and the page of the year to be opened.

Example
[edit]

Anna Maria della Pietà died in 1782 So open her page to get the exact date of her death and open the relevant year 1782

Go to the date or nearby (she's 10 Aug): add * August 10Anna Maria della Pietà], Italian violinist, composer and teacher (b. 1696) ...<-or as much of the detail as you think appropriate

If there is already an August 10 with someone else's name, you can just add **Anna Maria della Pietà, Italian violinist, composer and teacher (b. 1696) under the previous entry.

If there is no date given on her article but there is a year, at the end of the list there is usually a heading

  • date unknown

So you just add her to the list there as **Anna Maria della Pietà, Italian violinist, composer and teacher (b. 1696)

Then repeat for her birth year...

My list of names and years needing work

User:Antiqueight/Pages#Full List

If dates are not your thing, you can check the surname page for the person and add them there - I often have with my list but not always. Then there may be Lists where you can add her name, using the style of the page for guidance. The lists can be of Irish Writers, of Irish Women Writers, etc. Usually I try to add to those but not always. You can do this with any of the biographies, but I know that I have not done the birth and death years for most of those on my list so it gives you place to start.

Non exhaustive lists...
