Hyram Yarbro, also known mononymously as Hyram, is an American media personality, skin care commentator, and businessman. He is best known for his YouTube and TikTok channels about skin care.[2] His videos consist primarily of product reviews, skin care advice, and reactions to celebrity skin care routine videos. He is known for his objective reviews of products and his catchphrase “Ingredients don’t lie, bitch.”[3]

In 2021 he launched his own skin care product line, Selfless by Hyram, with Sephora. The Guardian has called him “the most trusted skin care authority for young people all over the world.”[3]

Biography

[edit]
Hyram's hometown of Paulden, Arizona

Yarbro grew up on a cattle ranch in the small town of Paulden, Arizona.[4] He is one of five children and was raised in a Mormon household.[5] He described growing up gay as a member of a Mormon community as “an extremely suppressive environment – in and outside the house – which used religion to justify prejudice.”[3] He left the church as an adult.[6]

In 2014 he moved to Hawaii and attended BYU–Hawaii for a year and a half. After leaving the university he decided to continue living in Hawaii and began working as a makeup artist in at Saks 5th Avenue.[7] About his decision to remain in Hawaii, he stated “For the first time ever I felt, ‘Wow, I’m in a place where, you know, people don’t really care [about my sexuality] and you can be whoever you want to be. I thought I was only going to be here for two years and yet I’m still here. I’ve just absolutely fallen in love with it.”[3]

Career

[edit]

While working as a makeup artist at Saks 5th Avenue, Yarbro said that he noticed that customers were paying a lot for skin care products and he wondered if the high cost was really necessary for effective skin care. He began researching ingredients, reading published articles about skin care, and watching videos from dermatologists and chemists.[8]

He noted a lack of YouTube channels with clear information about skin care for people who did not have a dermatological background. He started making YouTube videos about skin care in 2017. After two years he had gained 2,000 followers. His channel gained more popularity in 2019 when he began posting reaction videos to TikTok skin care videos.[9]

He joined TikTok in May 2020. Shortly after, he decided to quit his full time job as a make up artist to pursue content creation full time. His videos primarily consist of skin care advice, reaction to skin care videos, and product reviews.

His product reviews are primarily ingredients-based, per his mantra “Ingredients don’t lie” regardless of the popularity of a brand or company founder. He also favors products that are environmentally-friendly, fragrance-free, and affordable.[2]

Selfless by Hyram

[edit]

Yarbro and co-founders Colette Laxton and Mark Curry launched a skin care line called Selfless by Hyram in June 2021 with five products: cleanser, moisturizer, salicylic-acid serum, exfoliating serum, and retinol serum. The product line is sold exclusively at Sephora.

A percentage of the profits of the products from his skin care line go toward the non profit organizations Rainforest Trust and Thirst Project.[8]

Awards

[edit]

In 2021 he was nominated for a Streamy award.[10]
