Establishment

As a result of administrative change in 1991, the Department of Justice and Corrective Services became the Department of Justice. The Public Trust Office was transferred back from the Attorney-General's Department. The Art Unions Sub-Program of the Department of Justice and Corrective Services was, however, transferred to the Treasury Department (12).[1]

The department was part of the Minister for Justice and Corrective Services portfolio from 11 April 1991 to 24 September 1992.[1]

Abolition

The Department of Justice was abolished on 24 September 1992 by virtue of the Public Service Management (Departmental Changes) Order (no.1) 1992 Queensland Government Gazette 1992, Vol CCCI, No 15, pp271-275.[1]

Function

The agency had the following responsibilities:[1]

  • The Department of Justice was responsible for providing and maintaining the machinery for the administration of justice in the State of Queensland.
  • In addition to its traditional core functions such as courts' administration and maintenance of the State legal system, Department of Justice was responsible for an increasing scope of activities: consumer affairs, legal advice and services to government (legal aid), law reform, the conduct of elections and referendums, and company law administration.
