Background

[edit]

Miami Dolphins

[edit]

For the past 2 decades, the Dolphins have not ranked top 10 in offense once. Miami and Baltimore have known to have a somewhat fierce rivalry, as before the game the all time series was 10-7 Baltimore. In the 2021 Season however, Miami defeated Baltimore 22-10 in a Thursday Night Football upset, as Baltimore was favorited by 7.

Baltimore Ravens

[edit]

The Ravens were lead by 2019 quarterback Lamar Jackson, one the main stars on their offense other than Mark Andrews, the teams tight end. For 25 years, Baltimore hadn’t lost to Miami in M&T Bank Stadium, becoming a struggle for Miami each time they played Baltimore away.

Game Summary

[edit]

1st Quarter

[edit]

Baltimore Ravens kick returner Devin Duvernay returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, making the score 7-0 Baltimore. It was the first kickoff return TD of the season. After a few plays on Miami’s drive, Tua Tagovailoa threw a pass that was intercepted by Marcus Williams. The rest of the quarter remained scoreless.

2nd Quarter

[edit]

At 10:54 in the 2nd quarter, Tua Tagovailoa hit Jaylen Waddle on a 6-yard pass for a TD, tying the score 7-7. On a routine slant on Baltimore possession, Lamar Jackson hit Rashod Bateman in which he took it for a 75 yard first play TD. 14-7 Baltimore. After 7 plays, Miami punted. In 6 plays, Baltimore scored on a Lamar Jackson 1 yard TD to Mark Andrews. 21-7 Baltimore. After 8 plays, Tua Tagovailoa threw an interception to Marcus Williams in which the pass was intended for Jaylen Waddle. Baltimore then scored again from a Lamar Jackson 12-yard pass TD to Demarcus Robinson. 28-7 Baltimore. The Dolphins did not score on the ensuing drive as the clock expired for halftime.

3rd Quarter

[edit]

Around 7 minutes into drive, Tua Tagovailoa hit Mike Gesicki in the back of the end-zone for a 14-yard TD. After a back and forth possession, Baltimore ran an option play in which Lamar Jackson ran for a career long 79-yard rushing touchdown with 0:26 left in the 3rd quarter. Baltimore would not score another touchdown for the rest of the game, and Miami’s chances at winning the game seemed slim to none as the score was 35-14 Baltimore at the end of the quarter.

4th Quarter

[edit]

3 minutes into Miami’s drive, Tua Tagovailoa hit River Cracraft for a 2-yard TD pass. 35-21 Baltimore. After a failed drive by Baltimore, Miami yet again scored on a 48-yard pass to Tyreek Hill to make the score 35-28 Baltimore. After yet another failed drive by Baltimore, Tua Tagovailoa hit Tyreek Hill deep for a 60-yard touchdown to tie the game 35-35. Baltimore finally scored with a 51-yard field goal by Justin Tucker. With Miami back in possession, they drove to Baltimores 7-yard line, in which Tua hit Jaylen Waddle for the lead changing 7-yard TD pass, their first lead of the game. 42-38 Miami. Though Baltimore still had 3 timeouts, they failed to drive down the field and Lamar Jackson’s Hail Mary pass intended for Rashod Bateman fell incomplete. Miami won the game 42-38.

Aftermath

[edit]

Miami

[edit]

The 21+ point comeback was the first-fourth quarter comeback to occur in the past 12 years. Since 2011, teams were 0-711 when trailing by 21+ in the fourth quarter. This was also the second largest comeback in Dolphins history.[3] Tua Tagovailoa six touchdown performance tied a franchise record which is also held by both Bob Griese and Dan Marino. Tua’s 469 yards passing and 6 passing touchdowns are both career highs. His 469 yards also ranks fourth in franchise history.

Miami scored 34 points in the second half, with 28 points alone in the 4th quarter. They had 233 yards alone in the fourth quarter, and 4 touchdowns.

Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle became the first WR duo to catch 10 passes for over 150 yards and two touchdowns. [4]

This was also Miami’s first win in M&T Bank Stadium since 1997. The 42 points scored exceeded the 39 points combined in their last 4 matchups with Baltimore.

To top it off, Tua was named the AFC offensive player of The Week for Week 2. [5]

Baltimore

[edit]

With the loss, Baltimore fell to 1-1. This game also tied the franchises record for the biggest blown lead, (21).

In an interview with Lamar Jackson after the game, he stated: "Yes, like you said, we were moving the ball, putting points up; we've just got to finish. It came down to the fourth quarter; they were putting points on the board [and] we weren't. We put three points on the board, probably in the fourth quarter. So, we've got to just finish. They played their tail off, though.“[6]

On a side note, Lamar Jackson had one of the best games of his career, as he was 21-29, 318 passing yards, 3 passing touchdowns, on the ground he ran for 119 yards and a touchdown.

The teams will meet each other again in the 2023 Season, for a 3rd consecutive time.
