User:GGT/Stub-free Cyprus

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stub-free Cyprus is a long-term project with the aim of expanding as many of stub-class articles about Cyprus as possible, with the ultimate aim of achieving zero stubs about Cyprus.

The project is inspired by the numerous destubbing challenges that have previously taken place. At the time of initial writing, 15 June 2023, Wikipedia's Cyprus-related coverage suffers from a number of widespread problems, including:

  • The vast majority of articles about Cypriot villages and towns are very short stubs, most of them having been created by one user a decade ago and not having seen much improvement since.
  • There are hundreds of stubs about Cypriot footballers. A lot of these are permastubs, i.e. can never be expanded beyond the stub-class, as the footballers in question do not satisfy WP:GNG. In a lot of cases, this is associated with WP:BLP issues.
  • A lot of the Cyprus-related stubs contain out-of-date information, having been created often over a decade ago and not having received any attention since.

As such, the project envisions a substantial uplift of the encyclopaedic coverage of Cyprus. It will involve improving ("destubbing") Cyprus-related articles where possible, removing stub tags from already-expanded articles where appropriate, but in parallel may involve deletion or merger of non-notable articles that would otherwise remain as permastubs. The deletions and mergers will also thereby aim to balance the systemic bias which has resulted in the coverage of footballers having been prioritised so far. In parallel, new non-stub articles are to be created to expand the coverage of Cyprus, and of course other content issues in longer-standing articles regarding sourcing and neutrality can also be addressed. Although a personal project at the outset, anyone is welcome to contribute - just make a note of your contributions below!
