Knights of Columbus, 7516

The Catholic gentlemen of St. Susanne Catholic Church were granted their petition for a charter in the Knights of Columbus on March 6th, 1980[2]. The first meeting was held on April 10 1980 with Ed Gorman as the elected Grand Knight for the new charter.

The Mount Vernon Knights of Columbus are known for their charity work and fund raisers for local Lawrence County and Missouri state groups in need of assistance. They have 3 major events that raise a majority of the funds they give to charity.

  • St. Susanne Fish Fry - Is hosted by the Knights of Columbus, 7516 and supported by the P.C.C.W. (Parish Council of Catholic Woman) and the St. Susanne parishioners. This is held during the Easter Season of Lent. They serve an all-you-can-eat Fried Fish dinner, during the first 5 Fridays of the Easter Season, and is open to the public.
  • Apple Butter Makin' Days - The Knight of Columbus, 7516 run a booth at the Annual Apple Butter Makin' Days, hosted by the Mount Vernon, Chamber of Commerce. The server Brats and Fries from 1980 until 2007. In 2008 the Knights of Columbus, 7516, withdrew from hosting a booth that year due to loss of funds. They returned in 2009 with a Fried Dessert Booth, offering Fried Twinkie's, Fried Snickers and Fried Oreo's, which they still currently run.
  • Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities - Mistakenly know as "The Tootsie Roll Drive" has been an important fund raiser for the Knights of Columbus. The Mount Vernon Council 7516 has been raising funds for this program since 1980. They hold their annual event the 3rd weekend in October. As of April, 2010, the have raised $9,972 during the previous 30 years. In October 2010 on their 31st annual event, they received a record breaking amount of donation of $888.58. 100% of these fund have been donated to multiple recipients from Knights of Columbus Developmental Center at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center to Special Olympics, Missouri, of Joplin.
