Organizations

[edit]

Team building in organizations is a common approach to improving performance.

Fun is an important component to team building, but the intent is to become productive, focused, and aligned. Purely recreational activities can be helpful, but must be timed and consider the capabilities of team members (e.g., sports are not for everyone). Other activities geared toward creating a learning environment, exceeding results and engaging employees must be present.

Employee engagement exercises allow teams to create solutions that are meaningful to them, with direct impact on the individuals, the team and the organization. Experiential learning and ramification methods are effective ways to engage millennials in the workplace. Employee engagement is effective because:

  • employees enjoy problem-solving activities;
  • problem-solving creates ownership;
  • it can increase capacity;
  • competitive activities encourage a results-based outlook.

Outdoor activities can be an effective way to engage the team, but there are many different types of team building activities possible.

While a typical work environment tends to target individuals and personal goals, teaching employees good team building skills can help employees unite around a common goal to generate greater productivity. Some of the organizational benefits of team building

  • enhance positive communications
  • teaches leadership skills
  • greater productivity and creativity
  • teaches the ability to work closely together as a team to solve problems
  • trust and support one another
  • greater respect for each other’s work and contributions
  • higher job satisfaction

Melee was also included in the Evolution Championship Series (Evo) in 2007, a fighting game tournament held in Las Vegas and was hosted at Evo 2013 after a charity vote to decide the final game to be featured in its tournament lineup. Due to the large turnout and popularity that year, Evo again included Melee at their 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 events. In 2014 Melee was played at MLG Anaheim. Evo 2016 was the largest Melee tournament for 6 years with 2,350 entrants. That crown was eventually taken by the Ludwig Ahgren Championship Series 4, an online tournament which had 2,422 entrants in 2022.[1]
