Malombra is a 1917 silent Italian drama film directed by Carmine Gallone.[1] The film was shown as part of the Silent Divas of the Italian Cinema programme at the 38th New York Film Festival in 2000.[2]

Plot

Marina di Malombra (Borelli) moves into the castle of her uncle, Count Cesare D'Ormegno. Despite the servants' advice, Marina chooses a haunted room overlooking the lake and laughs off the servants' warnings.

In a desk, she discovers an old mirror and a letter from an ancestor called Cecilia, who was driven to death by an ancestor of her uncle. The letter contains a curse from Cecilia that whoever reads it will taken on the weight of her tortured soul and carry out her revenge. Marina reads the letter and then sees herself and Ceclia in the mirror, which then breaks. Marina the imagines Cecilia at a ball via a flashback. Double exposures show Cecilia sitting at the desk writing the letter.

lives in a castle prior to her wedding. She begins to read letters written by an ancestor called Cecilia. She finds out that Cecilia was driven to her death by her uncle. Marina identifies with Cecilia and take revenge on her behalf by murdering her uncle. After she has done this, Marina commits suicide.
