Greetings! You commented on the article Katie Holmes when it was on WP:FAC. I've redone the article and hope to renominate it on FAC soon. But in the meantime, I'd be grateful for your comments on WP:PR at Wikipedia:Peer review/Katie Holmes/archive1. PedanticallySpeaking 21:07, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

Three weeks of admin tools

[edit]

Today three weeks have passed since I was granted access to the administrator toolbox. During this time I have made use of it in the following way:

  • Protections and unprotections: 1
  • Blocks and unblocks: 4
  • Deletions and restorations: 69
  • Rollbacks: 246

I've found that the rollback tool is much more useful than I'd thought for vandalism patrol. In fact it makes that task so easy that I've been doing it more than before. On the other hand I've been surprised by how little the blocking tool is needed. Having done a significant amount of vandalism patrol I have still only blocked one solitary vandal. The great majority of addresses which send out a vandal edit do so only once. Those who do it more often usually stop after a warning or two. Only rarely is a block actually needed and in those cases someone usually beats me to it.

As a side note I haven't retired from writing articles either. I'm still hoping to bring Freyr up to featured status but even though I've already performed more edits on it than on Hrafnkels saga back in the day, a lot of work remains to be done. Community expectations for featured articles have gone up and so have my own ambitions. I'm currently waiting for a couple of books I ordered to arrive and then I may be able to make the final push.

I'm trying my best to live up to the trust you showed in me by supporting my RFA. If ever you feel uncertain whether I'm using the admin tools in the best interests of the project, let me know. I am at any time willing to relinquish the mop and reapply for it to address concerns people have and ensure that I'm not using the admin tools without being trusted to do so. Another Esperanzial note...

[edit]

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Yours, as ever, Esperanzially,

Good luck!

Hey Merovingian, I hear you. Junior year is making me cut back as well. It's a lot of pressure; SATs, college stuff, etc. Anyway, I figured I'd stop by and give you my regards. Good luck with everything! Robert 03:39, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi. You voted in support of Alex Bakharev his previous RfA, and I just wanted to let you know that there's a second one at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Alex Bakharev 2. --Khoikhoi 03:11, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi, Merovingian - you left a nice welcome note on my talk page a couple of months ago, and I'm wondering if I can call on you now. An admin FCYTravis got another admin to protect the Kaiser Permanente page after another high level Wikipedian (not sure if he's an admin) Omsbudsman had made a plea for developing the page. I had already offered to address [FYCTravis]]'s sourcing concerns on the Talk page. I feel like FCYTravis has some sort of emotional investment since he's using words like "fuck" and "stupid" in the edit summaries, and it's possibly because (according to his user page) he lives in an area that's dominated by Kaiser as an employer. I believe the Third Party admin who protected the page just saw what FYCTravis was making a request to a fellow admin, and he didn't check the Talk page for my request for help with the sourcing. Is there anything you can do to get this page unprotected again?

I'd also like to remove the Peer Review request (I was told this was inappropriate by TantalumTelluride - and I put a request in the Delete queue tonight: just not sure if I formatted it properly) and the NPOV label (there are many POVs in play, but this label was placed by someone trying to devalue everyone else's opinion, and he hasn't been around for a few weeks. I believe the only appropriate label at this point is the "Cleanup" one. I would appreciate any help you can offer in dealing with all this. --Pansophia 09:04, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi, Merovingian, you voted to undelete the Universism article last year. The outcome of that VFD shelved the article until March 2006. However, the issue has come up again just shy of that date, the article is again undergoing a DRV. Since last year, Universism has been featured in many media outlets, including the LA Times and CNN's Anderson Cooper 360. Would you please vote again in favor of undeleting the article? --Mindbender 20:28, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

The use Siddiqui is doing VANDALISM by deleting the facts added by me, distorting the facts and the names of the places in the Article on Karachi. Please help disable this user. Aursani 23:13, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

Adding this adds one to the category list under "u" for user. Do you know anyone who could fix this? Good luck on your other endeavors. Thanks. --Beth Wellington 00:00, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

New Sports Wiki/Community

[edit]

I noticed you were a Mariners Fan. My friends and I started a sports wiki/community that you may be interested in. It uses Wikipedia's software but we made a lot of technological improvements to allow for more news, opinion articles, and better integration of sports statistics. The site is located here: http://www.armchairgm.com. Check our baseball and Mariners section its pretty cool:

When you get the chance, let me know what you think.

Thanks!

Achnadrish Lodge has been proposed for deletion. NickelShoe 23:18, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

Could you weigh in at the bottom of the Talk Page for Katelyn Faber regarding the inclusion of an image of her? User:Tufflaw, who unsuccessfully tried to have the entire article deleted back in December 2005 insists on censoring/deleting it for extremely specious reasons, and I've been asked to gather a consensus. Please read the bottom two sections of that page. Thanks. Nightscream 19:06, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

A watered-down version of the proposed policy against censorship is now open for voting. Will you knidly review the policy and make your opinions known? Thank you very much. Loom91 10:25, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

Esperanza Newsletter #2

[edit]
The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.

Since this isn't the result of an AC meeting, I have decided to go Old Skool. This note is to remind you that the elections are taking place now and will end at 23:50 UTC on 2006-04-29. Please vote here. Thanks. --Celestianpower háblame 20:42, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Latin question

[edit]

Would you mind clarifying the Latin you added to the Caul page? It looks as if you're giving that as an etymology, but all the sources I've seen derive it from Old English. I'm not sure what else the Latin is supposed to represent. Thanks. --Bedawyn 22:26, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

[edit]
The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.

Symbolwiki

[edit]

I noticed you had an edit on the symbolwiki article. The concept of symbolwiki is dear to my heart, and such a symbol system already exists, though has very little presence thus far. Check out Blissymbolics if you get a chance. PS couldn't figure out how to turn the formatting off, sorry. --Mlandau 05:49, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

RuneScapeWiki

[edit]

Hi, I'm the user Oddlyoko from RuneScapeWiki. Remember me? Well, since you're not editing anymore, and taking time off, we were wondering if there was any way you could transfer your leadership of the wiki (or whatever that rank is called) to one of the other admins at RuneScapeWiki.
