Li Hu

Li Hu is a Chinese architect and professor. He is the founding partner of OPEN Architecture, visiting professor at the Tsinghua University in Beijing and China Central Academy of Fine Arts, former partner of Steven Holl Architects, and director of Columbia University GSAPP’s Studio-X Beijing.[1]

LI received his B. Arch. from Tsinghua University in Beijing in 1996 and his M. Arch. from Rice University[2] in 1998.[3]

Work

During his tenure at Steven Holl Architects, LI Hu was responsible for Linked Hybrid building in Beijing,[4] Vanke Center in Shenzhen,[5] Raffles City in Chengdu, and Sifang Art Museum in Nanjing.[6]

In 2010, Li Hu left Steven Holl Architects to focus on his own practice, OPEN Architecture, which he co-founded with Huang Wenjing in 2003 in New York City. OPEN Architecture is a collaborative studio that explores new architectural possibilities in the context of contemporary China and beyond. Some of the firm’s notable projects include the Garden School/Beijing No.4 High School Fangshan Campus, the Gehua Youth and Cultural Center, the UCCA Dune Art Museum,[7] Yichang Grand Theatre,[8] the Tank Shanghai art complex,[9] the Pingtan Art Museum, and the Chapel of Sound.[10]

LI Hu has been the recipient of “50 under 50: Innovators of the 21st Century” [11] and ICON Magazine’s “Future 50”[12]

LI speaks frequently at academic conferences and universities worldwide. He is also a frequent jury and curators for international design competitions and exhibitions.[13][14]

LI Hu has also participated in the Venice Biennale China Pavilion in 2021 and 2014, the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial in 2015,[15] the “Soul of the City” in Verona, Italy in 2017,[16] and the China House Vision in 2018.[17][18]

Recently, LI Hu and Huang Wenjing co-authored three books titled OPEN Questions (2018),[19] Towards Openness (2018)[20] and OPEN Reaction (2015)[20] The most recent book on their practice is Reinventing Cultural Architecture: A Radical Vision by OPEN (published by Rizzoli in 2022)[21][22][23]

As part of the architectural practice OPEN Architecture, Li Hu together with his partner Wenjing Huang received several awards, including 2021 Arcasia Awards Gold (Asia),[24] 2021 AR Future Project Awards (UK),[25] 2020 Design for Asia Awards,[26] 2020 London Design Museum’s Design of the Year Nomination (UK),[27] 2019 LEAF Awards (EU),[28] 2019 Interior Design Awards Best of Year (USA),[29] 2019 P/A Awards (USA),[30], 2019 AZ Award by Azure,[31] 2018 AIA Education Facility Design Award of Excellence,[32] 2018 Civic Trust Award,[33] 2015 AIANY Design Award.[34]
