Entropy

[edit]

Unfortunately, I don't have as much free time as I used to. Because of that, I don't get the opportunity to edit Wikipedia as much as I'd like, and from the looks of things, many are in the same boat. I see fewer and fewer editors out there, and Wikipedia suffers because of it. That's to be expected. Wikipedia's initial burst of popularity was going to level out at some point. But the serious problem facing Wikipedia isn't so much that the number of editors has decreased, but that the majority of editors left behind seem to be overzealous deletionists. Nearly everything I see updated in my watchlist is a cut of some kind and looking at the edit history of those doing the cutting, they rarely have any interest in the subject they're cutting at all. They're just cutting for cutting's sake. Thousands of thousands of blind cuts to article after article. Cutting has become an end unto itself and Wikipedia is dramatically worse for it.

If you see an uncontroversial claim on an article that seems reasonable but is unsourced, find a source for it, or leave it alone. If you simply cut it without putting that work in first, you're nothing more than entropy breaking this site down. You remove valuable information from the site and discourage the contribution of inexperienced Wikipedians, who may in fact be incredibly experienced in the field they're writing about.

As I've said for a long time, deletionists should start with their own accounts.
