"Sleep" is a song by English rock band Slowdive recorded in 1992.
Background
[edit]"Sleep" was originally composed and recorded by English band Eternal, also from Reading, in which Christian Savill was a member, and released on June 1990 as the opening track of their EP Breathe.[1]
Slowdive recorded their own version around October 1992,[2] sung by Rachel Goswell, lyrics were changed completely and kept the general song structure. Being part of the Souvlaki recording sessions, it was eventually not included like the approximately 40 potential songs for their second album that Alan McGee, the head of Slowdive's label Creation Records, rejected.[3] As such, "Sleep" began circulating unofficially as part of bootlegs around the time, most notably on two bootleg albums known as I Saw the Sun (1992) and Hide Yer Eyes (2011).[4]
Sleep was unofficially released by an unknown person on 10 July 2021, 28 years after it was recorded. The song was uploaded on to the bands Spotify and Apple Music under the title "Sleep (2021 Remastered version)".[5] Goswell took to Twitter and stated that the release of Sleep was not authorised by any Slowdive members,[6] and the song was removed in the following days.
