Troy Boleyn (born February 16, 1979)[1] is an American actor, musician, producer and songwriter. He is the founder of Studio DeBoleyne and Indie label DeBoleyne Records, which has produced and distributed digital albums for the bands Architecture of Sound, Vadoma, Glytturbahl and NovaFrost[2]. Other bands in the process of putting out first albums include Outlaw Country act Jack Rye, ska-metal band Chavo and the Polish metal band STRAJK (Strike), which will be recorded in Poland at GruStudios. Boleyn, who typically opts to hire female vocalists rather than sing, will be singing in Polish for the band's debut album[3].

Early life

[edit]

He was born in Oelwein, Iowa,[8]the son of a French\Roma father and a Lakota mother[1]. His paternal grandfather was a travelling country musician, who was the drummer and leader in his own band, Tommie Boleyn and his Cowboys. When he was eleven, he got his first acoustic guitar[3]. .

Later, during high school, he transferred from Oelwein to Cedar Falls. It was there, at age 15, that he started acting. His high school provided opportunities to enter into stage acting, which would then lead to his pursuit of community theater programs as an extracurricular activity. Through his school and community acting groups, he met Michael Mosley and Jake Boeke, both of which were also rock musicians - and both played a huge role in shaping his future. Mosley introduced Troy to the music of Type O Negative, which he has cited as being one of his top three biggest musical influences (the others being Faith No More and Rammstein)[5] . Boeke introduced him to the music of Nine Inch Nails, and they would occasionally meet up to jam and Jake taught him some useful guitar techniques[6]. In his final year of high school, Troy stayed awhile with the family of his friend, Steve Potter who was the older brother to his drama class pal, Melinda Potter. Both were artists as well as musicians, Potter being well known in the community for his artwork, eventually going on to work for Topps illustrating Garbage Pail Kids cards and later contributing to the community as an art teacher[7].

Nearing the end of his time in high school, he'd learn that his transfer to Cedar Falls left him short a few credits of graduating on time. He quickly found a work around, as he was invited to join the US Army on the 'buddy program' for a two year enlistment[3]. At that time, the Army was accepting GED recruits. Troy turned eighteen in February 1997, and promptly completed his GED and entered service to the Army as an Infantry Medic[4].

During any free time from the Army, he continued working with a community public service group which he had been a part of throughout high school, who promoted the awareness and prevention of child abuse and domestic violence (along with the afore mentioned pal Mosley)[3]. He was invited to perform in Poland with the group, who had impressed a visiting Director of Education from the Gdansk-based Polish theater, Teatr Wybrzeze. The Polish theater, along with the Polski Czerwony Krzyż, was seeking a means to produce a public service addressing the rise of both child abuse and domestic violence in Poland after the fall of communism just years before. After months of fundraising, the group was able to go to Poland[4]. The initial visit to Poland in March 1998 set forth a solid path in Boleyn's life. Just a few months after the first visit, Troy would return, again working with Teatr Wybrzeze, while also seeking out his music interests. He continued to visit Poland intermittently while in the military. In 2001, he married Ewa (Eva) Graff, a Polish national he met on his first visit to Poland. His 'best man' in the Catholic wedding in a 'Navy Church' in Sopot was his buddy who had introduced them in March 1998, Pawel (Pajo) Nieuzyla[4].

Shortly after leaving the Army, Boleyn returned to military service in the Navy. Because his father was a Seabee in Vietnam, and his oldest brothers were Marines, he chose the path leading to eventually becoming a Fleet Marine Force Corpsman in North Carolina, where his dad and both siblings served. During his stay in Jacksonville and Camp Lejeune, Troy made friends with artists in Wilmington, NC just about an hour south of Camp Lejeune. They put him on to casting agents that got him small roles in Dawson's Creek and One Tree Hill[5] . He'd go on to work in films in Wilmington as well[4].

It wouldn't be until 2004, however, that he'd move to Poland semi-permanently after his completion of military service. Military life took a toll on his marriage, with Ewa seeking annulment, having it granted in 2006[5]. Despite his aversion to the dissolution of his marriage, he and Ewa remained friends. His focus soon shifted to music, and when an offer to teach English as a native speaker came, he saw his opportunity to move forward. Pajo gave him a place to stay while he took up the new career. Both of them being metal music fans would frequent the local rock bars. One night in a pub in Sopot in late 2004, a local metal band came in to the pub after their rehearsal. While Troy was at the bar ordering another round, the band's lead guitarist approached the bar sporting a Megadeth tee shirt. Troy noticed a resemblance between the musician and Dave Mustaine, and being a fan of Megadeth himself, opened a conversation. The two became fast friends. Troy and Pajo were soon attending rehearsals with the band and hanging out often at the Elita Pub in Sopot each week after rehearsals. The sense of family among the group led to Troy doubling down on music, however, he'd soon get a shot at being in Poland's TV and film industry, postponing any immediate musical aspirations.[5]

Career

[edit]

Despite getting started in music at an early age and being a part of a long legacy of music from both sides of his family, it wouldn't be until 2006 that he'd start his first professional music stint. Recording the 'Warsaw Sessions' between 2006 and 2008 in Warsaw, Poland - a series of demos with DJ Mack Zaccke in the Industrial genre - he was able to compile his first full set list of original and commercial remix songs. Remixes included Korn's 'Adidas', a mashup of Eminem and Rammstein blending vocals for 'My Name Is' and music from 'Engel' with original guitar tracks overlaid, and mixes of Slayer's 'Reign in Blood' and Black Sabbath's 'Children of the Grave' with guitars and vocals by Boleyn. These were released locally on CD and would later be released in 2019 on a limited run through Universal Record's 'Spinnup' distribution[3].

In 2017, Boleyn would have an opportunity to help his long time friend Grucha start up a new studio in Gdansk, Poland. Troy was residing in Texas at the time, but contributed the studio's name, logo and necessary equipment to get the endeavor up and rolling. Grucha's talent and natural endearing qualities led to the studio being highly successful, with Grucha going on to work for DDTVN, a major Polish new outlet. From 2014 through the present, Troy also occasionally works voice-over jobs for GruStudios exclusively. 2017 would also mark the beginning of his return to music recording, in Denton, TX. In 2018, after researching how to get his independent music onto Pandora, he discovered distribution companies TuneCore and DistroKid[5]. He released his first singles and albums on May 19th, 2019, coinciding with his ancestor Anne Boleyn's 1633 execution. Anne was also a musician and composer[9].

From 2019, Troy invested more heavily in his musical endeavors hiring female vocalist Caitlin Anselmo of Nashville to sing on his songs (mainly for Glytturbahl, as well as a couple songs also with Architecture of Sound), the lyrics being composed by Boleyn. Later, at the end of 2020, he hired vocalist Ele Dona from bands HiFi Stacy and Blackdust of Italy, violinist Ilona Perz-Golka (YLO Violin) of Poland and his pal Grucha for lead guitars and master mixing at GruStudios for the project 'Architecture of Sound'. Music for bands Vadoma, NovaFrost and Glytturbahl followed as he explored his talent in various genres[5].

From 2020 to 2023, he'd see six of his songs across three bands hit the local DFW airwaves via radio stations 97.1 KEGL, 91.7 KKXT and KNTU 88.1 Indie. These songs were 'Change', 'Pride of the Gypsies' and 'Nobody Knows' by Architecture of Sound, 'Touch the Sky' by Glytturbahl, 'Lo Que Importa' and 'Urban Moon' by Vadoma. Internationally, his music has been on Germany's alternative metal station FCK.FM as well as UK Talk Radio and London's 98 Phoenix FM.

Film and TV work

[edit]

Troy worked on US and Polish film and TV productions, both in acting and as a part of production staff. He got started as a featured extra in shows Dawson's Creek and One Tree Hill, and was Assistant Production Office Coordinator (APOC) under his friend, actress and photographer Mandy Brown on the films Loggerheads and Southern Belles (with Anna Faris), all filmed in Wilmington, NC[6]. After moving to Poland, he soon had work as an actor in the film adaptation of the Ted Dekker novel Thr3e, as well as being the dialog coach for a Polish Western featuring several highly acclaimed Polish actors (and Val Kilmer), and Ranczo Wilkowyje, a film adaptation of Polish TV drama Ranczo, with Radoslaw Pazura. He also had roles in Polish teen dramas 'Pierwszy Milosc' (First Love) and 'M Jak Milosc' (L for Love)[6].

Personal life

[edit]

He has a daughter who was born in Poland and continues to reside there with her mother. He's openly stated on several occasions that creating a legacy and seeking the best financial situation for his daughter is what drives his work in entertainment as well as day jobs. Though he continues to cope with separation anxiety, he's stated that there's no room for failure when it comes to ensuring his daughter has a good life[3].

Returning to the Iowa in 2014, shortly after his last Christmas with his nearly three year old daughter to aid his father who was suffering health complications related to his time in Camp Lejeune as a Seabee during Vietnam, as well as lingering effects of exposure to Agent Orange while in Vietnam, Troy was looking for new opportunities to both better financially provide for his daughter, and further his music endeavors. His father wanted to return to Texas where he had once lived, so Troy soon got set up near Dallas, with a job working in behavioral health with Medical City Hospital. Only weeks after making the transition from Iowa to Texas, his father passed away in Iowa[3]. Troy has remained in Texas since, transitioning from the medical field to industrial mechanics, and later Agile management as a Scrum Master.
