Brick Romanesque

[edit]

Wow! Very nice and informative article. Just a micro style note. Subsections should have titles not in capitals... i.e., "Brick Romanesque churches", not "Brick Romanesque Churches". Ciao and good work. --Attilios (talk) 10:18, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Language in Brussels

[edit]

Hi Athinaios. I note that you have replaced the German pronunciation of the name of Brussels in the lead section. In the article itself and in documents I have read, German is not the official language of Brussels. We generally try not to clutter the lead section with too much minor information. I have considered that you might include a statement that there are some (what is it - less than 1%?) German speakers in Belgium, and a few of these may live in Brussels, in the Language section of the article further down. Though that section is already considered questionable. Do you have any figures for the amount of German speakers in Brussels - is the percentage significantly higher than any other non-German city in Europe? If the figure is not significant then even mentioning it in the Language section might be regarded as too trivial. It would be a good idea to get a reference to support mentioning the German language. In the meantime I would like to remove the German pronunciation from the lead section. Would you have any continued objection? Regards SilkTork *What's YOUR point? 18:20, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've been looking for information on German speakers in Brussels and I can't find anything to help you. This BBC source [2] does indicate that the German speakers in Belgium are a significant minority and are in the Wallonia region, which doesn't include Brussels. Regards SilkTork *What's YOUR point? 18:37, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Replied on User Talk:SilkTork. athinaios | Talk 18:51, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Silk Tork. I am unsure what kind of information you are seeking. Brussels is the capital of the Kingdom of Belgium. That state has three, not two, official languages. To me, it would appear sensible to include the name of the city in all official languages of the country run from it (as is the case, e.g., on French wikipedia). I don't think the number of German-speakers who live in the city or region is relevant here, as opposed to the official status of the language in question in the country in question. (edit conflict) That's why my edits summary stated German is one of the official languages of Belgium, of which Brussels is the capital. athinaios | Talk 18:42, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's fine. But the article is about Brussels. It's not about Belgium. In the same way that London is about London, not the United Kingdom, which has several languages. In addition it is Wiki policy to use IPA, and articles are moving toward that. Check Help:Pronunciation. I find that for articles on places which will have a distinct regional pronunciation that using the regional pronunciation is helpful. However, as the chances of hearing Brussels pronounced in German in Brussels is as likely as hearing Paris, London, or Rome pronounced in German there is a limit to how useful that information actually is. If you feel strongly that the information is useful (as opposed to simply a matter of political stance, for an encyclopedia doesn't follow any political bias) then let us take this to the talkpage and get a wider perspective. SilkTork *What's YOUR point? 19:02, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, if that's what you prefer. I don't think I understand your issue. From my point of view, this is not political, nor is it anything to do with pronunciation. The article is about Brussels, which is, amongst other things, the capital of Belgium, and should give the name of that city in all official languages of that country. The German name is not a different pronunciation, but a slightly different name in the same way that, say, Copenhagen is not just a different pronunciation of København. It is the norm for articles on country capitals to give names in all relevant national languages (look at Edinburgh, Helsinki or Berne, also at Leuven and Liège (city)). The London article is unusual in that regard, perhaps because the multi-lingual character of Britain is less strongly felt than that of Belgium? If this needs to go on the Brussels talk page, I'd like to stress it's not because I feel the information is useful (which I do), but because you feel it is necessary to remove ca. 30 characters and a piece of information that has been part of the article since January 2003. athinaios | Talk 19:45, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've placed the discussion at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Cities#Pronunciation, and linked it to your talkpage as that's where our conversation started. I hadn't moved over your last comment above, but will do so now. It might be useful to direct all further comments on this to the Project talkpage or to your own talkpage to save us having this conversation in multi-locations! I've really been enjoying your recent architecture DYKs. If you have questions, or disagree with something I've detailed, feel free to contact me on the article talk page, here, or on my talk page to discuss. If you need more time to address the concerns, but progress is being made, I have no problems with extending the time limit. [edit]

Hello! I'd like to turn the first meetup of Wikipedians in Athens, Greece to your attention. We're a group of students involving three German Wikipedia admins and have set up this meetup for March 31st, 6:00 PM (18:00). The location is (to be exspected) the Ama Lachi. We'd very much like seeing as many Wikipedians from Greece as possible. We'd also like some help with the setup of the meeting; we need a contactsman in Athens. Black forest pottery

[edit]

Hi, I see our German friends now have a most impressive looking article on Black-figure pottery, though I have no idea what it says the quantity of it is clearly luxurious. I'd be glad to help with the reference checking and proof-reading if you are up for translating it. Twospoonfuls (ειπέ) 14:15, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I would really appreciate it if you would look over this article. As of a few days ago, I think it was a trainwreck - tangential material, lots of repetition, no contextualization. I did a major overhaul of it (but my approach was relatively conservative: I deleted fringe material and redundancies, and reorganized what was left according to distinctive points of view or approaches). It still needs work (I describe all this in greater detail on the talk page). One thing I did was provide a very abbreviated summary of how cultural anthropologists talk about culture. One thing that is sorely lacking is a section on material culture and archeology. Off the top of my head I think that something should be said about the first appearance of tools in hominan history, how archeologists study material culture (explaining words like matrix and assemblage), theories of material culture and the relationship between material culture and social organization/social life etc. Right now I am trying to focus on the core concepts/ways of conceptualizing/frameworks for study. But I do not have the knowledge of archeology to do this. So I am hoping that you can help out ... thanks Slrubenstein | Talk 19:38, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Question on Greek History

[edit]

Hello Athinaios. A new user by the name of Bobbobbob12345 (talk) has found a book claiming that the conquests of Alexander the great were 17.5 million km2. He says it was a Readers Digest atlas of world history that said that a so-called Greek empire under Alexander the great was larger than the Achaemenid Empire. (He didn't spell it correctly, either.) If you know the facts about the history about the history of ancient Greece and Persia, can you tell him at his (talk) page? Thanks, Rustyfence (talk) 00:51, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pottery articles

[edit]

Wow, love the Greek pottery painter articles, they're absolutely wow! Could you add Category:Ancient Greek vase painters to all of them, as you create? -- Zanimum (talk) 00:02, 19 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please be patient and help me. There's more vase painting stuff in the pipeline (I translated these for a non-wikipedia related reason and thought I might as well add them, after appropriate changes, as they are in many ways rather important and interesting) and I'll try to get it all out here within the next 10 days. I'll try to add the link you mention, but tweaking comes after that - but please help if you can, e.g, in case I overlook something.
If anyone's checking: I have prepared an array of articles on Greek vase painting and shall release them over the next few days. I don't have time to do it all in one go (I'd love to unleash them all at once, but I just can't - DYK anyone?). Many of the dead links will eventually connect. The remaining ones are, as always, asking to be made non-dead. So please be patient for a little while.
DYK, anynone?

Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 02:21, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiversity's WikiJournal of the Humanities needs you!

[edit]

Hi Athinaios!

I'm the editor-in-chief of the WikiJournal of the Humanities.

Given your experience with Wikipedia and understanding of academia, I'm emailing to ask whether you might be interested in getting involved as an editor for the WikiJournal of Humanities. It's modelled on the successful Wikipedia-integrated journals, the WikiJournal of Medicine, and the WikiJournal of Science. Our editorial board covers a range of fields and expertise, aiming to cover disciplines across the humanities, arts, and social sciences.

Our approach combines the rigour of academic peer review with the extensive reach of an encyclopedia. Consequently, it is an excellent way to achieve public engagement and outreach while impacting public understanding of complex scholarly topics. Articles undergo peer review and are subsequently published in both standard academic PDF format and directly onto Wikipedia, often getting over 100,000 views annually. This enhances the encyclopedia's scientific and factual accuracy and offers academics citable, indexed publications. Moreover, it enables significantly broader dissemination compared to traditional scholarly publishing methods.

The time commitment is flexible. An editor would generally dedicate 2-10 hours per month to a range of activities.

Please let me know if this aligns with your interests, or if you'd like to know more.

Your experience and expertise would be highly appreciated. Fransplace... Let's talk 23:14, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
