Hi ... many tx for the DYK notice for DYK for Wilson's Arch (Jerusalem).

Quick question .. all others I ever received, I believe, had this neat little click-tab, to check how many hits the dyk had. That is handy, as over time it helps one who does not want to have to search for an old DYK's stats on the DYK day. This one, however, seems to be missing that. Just wondering ...

Best.--Epeefleche (talk) 08:07, 2 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. I had a look back and I think it's because you nominated the article but didn't write it. I believe the bot that sends out these messages only puts those links on for the article creators, so the link will be on his/her talk page rather than yours. It's just the way the templates work... Cheers, BigDom 08:18, 2 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ahah -- that would explain why I never saw it before. Though I fail to see the rationale underlying the bot difference. Nevertheless ... I won't worry over it. Many tx for taking the time to figure it out, and respond.--Epeefleche (talk) 08:23, 2 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your participation in the March 2011 GAN backlog elimination drive

[edit]

On behalf of User:Wizardman and myself, we would like to take the time and thank you for your contributions made as part of the March 2011 Good articles backlog elimination drive. Awards and barnstars will go out shortly for those who have reviewed a certain number of articles.

During the backlog drive, in the month of March 2011,

  • 522 GA nominations were undertaken.
  • 423 GA nominations passed.
  • 72 GA nominations failed.
  • 27 GA nominations were on hold.

We started the GA backlog elimination drive with 378 GA nominations remaining, with 291 that were not reviewed at all. By 2:00, April 1, 2011, the backlog was at 171 GA nominations, with 100 that were left unreviewed.

At the start of the drive, the oldest unreviewed GA nomination was 101 days (Andrei Kirilenko (politician), at 20 November 2010, reviewed and passed 1 March 2011); at the end of the drive the oldest unreviewed GA nomination was 39 days (Gery Chico, at 24 February 2011, still yet to be reviewed as of this posting).

While we did not achieve the objective of getting the backlog of outstanding GA nominations down to below 50, we reduced the GA backlog by over half. The GA reviews also seemed to be of a higher quality and have consistently led, to say the least, to marginal improvements to those articles (although there were significant improvements to many, even on the some of the nominations that were failed).

If you would like to comment on the drive itself and maybe even make suggestions on how to improve the next one, please make a comment at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Good articles/GAN backlog elimination drives/March 2011#Feedback. Another GA backlog elimination drive is being planned for later this year, tentatively for September or October 2011. Also, if you have any comments or remarks on how to improve the Good article process in general, Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles can always use some feedback at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Good articles.

Again, on behalf of User:Wizardman and myself, thank you for making the March 2011 GA backlog elimination drive a success.

Matty Barlow.... HELP

[edit]

Hello again.. I read all the pear review comments and you mentioned bits about personal life, well for the past 2 weeks iv'e been looking and I cant find a thing. Just wondered if you could help me out with it abit. Also I think I could expand abit on Stalybridge but there isnt much more to realy write about after that. Thanks, –LiamTaylor17:54, 10 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'll try and have a look for some more sources but like you say I don't think there's much more available. Unfortunately though not every article can be a GA, sometimes there just isn't enough information out there. BigDom (talk) 08:39, 12 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Page-views

[edit]

On the WP:Football discussion you mentioned that Man City had 150,000+ views more than the seasons article. Please could you tell me where I can find page-views for wiki articles? TheBigJagielka (talk) 13:16, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Of course. If you go on any article and click the "View history" tab, there will be an external link fairly near the top of the page that says "Page view statistics". There's also a few other links, such as number of page watchers etc. If you click the link it will tell you the number of page views for the last 30 days or for each month and there's a chart to show the number of views each day. Hope this helps, BigDom (talk) 13:28, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Historical newspapers

[edit]

Hello. For a few months, I have online access via a library to a selection of 19th century newspapers, hence the frantic creation of season articles before said access runs out. If there's anything specific you'd like me to look up or verify (not whole articles, please :-) feel free to ask. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 11:37, 15 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I might be coming to you when my access runs out, then. Be warned, the runs aren't all complete. I've just discovered a four-year gap 1896-1899 inclusive in the Birmingham Daily Post, which really doesn't help. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 21:51, 15 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

DYK nomination of Adrian Lombard

[edit]

Hello! Your submission of Adrian Lombard at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and there still are some issues that may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! Yoninah (talk) 20:32, 20 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Good call, Dom, removing the section on the 'poisoned parmo' film. There's no evidence I can see on the www to substantiate that the film exists, let alone that it has any noteworthy significance. Nice one. Guffydrawers (talk) 08:00, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Not much chance of that, I'm afraid... cheers, Struway2 (talk) 10:04, 22 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Dom. We're on a bit of a drive to reference every term in the page at the moment. Once that's done, my guess is that we'll wait for the DYK to pass, and then start talking seriously about inclusion/exclusion criteria. Anyway, I've come a bit unstuck with scrimmage, not least because this lot show up everywhere I look. I don't suppose you have an offline ref we could use by any chance? —WFC04:13, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This is a bit of a tricky one. I could provide hundreds of newspaper articles where the term is used, but none that specifically say what it means. For example from The Times, 1 Nov 1880: "A fierce scrimmage carried on in front of the Eton posts and out of this a goal was kicked." There are loads more like that, but I'll keep looking through them and see if there's anything more useful. BigDom 06:36, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Harry Hooper (footballer born 1910) and 1936 FA Cup Final

[edit]

Hi there,

Just wanted to say sorry for elbowing my way into your hook at DYK. I saw the article on the 1936 FA Cup Final and thought I could help out by expanding it past it's single line. Ended up finding much more information than expected, and used the access I have to the Times archive to put in a match description. Miyagawa (talk) 12:08, 5 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I hadn't even realised you had hijacked my hook until I saw this post! I like what you've done and I'm very happy to have the double hook, just remember to add the DYK credit template to the hook so you don't miss out (if you haven't done it already). Cheers, BigDom 21:54, 5 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Infoboxes

[edit]

Thanks for that, glad to know my work is appreciated! I'm just trying to clean up articles and sort out dashes at the minute, as well as converting infoboxes whenever AWB picks it up (it doesn't always work, which is slightly odd) - but AWB can't change to the new parameters, so I'm doing that manually whenever I can be bothered! Thanks again, GiantSnowman 16:43, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

As the closer of this AfD, please note there was another article nominated in the same AfD. Could you please also delete. Thanks LibStar (talk) 11:53, 8 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, it was an edit conflict I think. Cheers for fixing it, BigDom 15:05, 8 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! You were the administrator who closed the TFD nomination of this template as delete. I just finished converting all transclusions of {{Infobox Landskap}} to {{Infobox settlement}}. However, I'm wondering: should the template be deprecated (as it is several years old, which means it may break older revisions), or should it be deleted? Thanks in advance, HeyMid (contribs) 23:04, 8 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That's a very good question and to be honest I don't know the proper answer. Even though the old revisions would not look right if it was deleted, the relevant information would still be there in the edit window of any revision. Also, the template naturally wasn't used on that many pages so it wouldn't be a massive problem. After looking for an hour or so this morning, I'm pretty sure that there is no "official" advice regarding this, so I think I will delete it for now and if another administrator wants to undelete it in the future, they can do. Cheers, BigDom 08:29, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That's OK for me. Thanks for your answer. HeyMid (contribs) 08:46, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi! Sorry I posted a deletion review request. I didn't know I could just ask you here. Then, by all means, just restore and relist it, I'll correct it a but. There's no need to overturn the decision. After all, there was a vote that stated clearly that the person doesn't have any lasting impact. Who knew that the voter didn't actually know anything. Bob Lord

[edit]

Found more than I thought I would in my books, so went ahead and created Bob Lord (football chairman). A bit more material and it could be a candidate for DYK if there's a suitably engaging hook. I've still got some bits to add about his roles at the Football League, and his anti-semitic outburst in 1974. Oldelpaso (talk) 21:54, 29 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've been away over the weekend so haven't had chance to add anything yet. Just had a look through and what you've done seems good, I'll have a look through my books later and see if there's anything else I can add. Cheers, BigDom 14:29, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article Ernest Bradshaw has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

WP:GNG: no significant coverage

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Closure of AfD

[edit]

Hi BigDom,

You recently closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/American Respiratory Care Foundation, with a keep result. In the process, you appear to have deleted a large chunk of the discussion, including a number of guideline-based arguments by myself and Vanadus which argued for deletion. I'd be grateful if you could explain the rationale behind your excision of this text (and also your decision to close; I'll admit to a degree of bias since I was arguing for deletion, but I don't see any policy-based rebuttal to the deletion arguments put forward).

Cheers, Yunshui  15:19, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough, these things happen. I disagree with the decision (obviously!), but it's your call. Thanks for restoring the deleted text. Yunshui  18:50, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've got a question about that same deleted article Anonymous (Street Meat). I remember that it had an image of an eye in the info box. Could you look at the deleted version to see what the file name was? Since it was the promotional image for her short film, I'd like to use that image on the article Migdia Chinea Varela where it mentions the film. I searched for the image on Commons but can't find it without the title. Cloveapple (talk) 19:01, 21 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Welcome to the 2012 WikiCup

[edit]

Hello, and welcome to the 2012 WikiCup! The competition officially begins at the start of 2012 (UTC) after which time you may begin to claim points. Your submission page, where you must note any content for which you wish to claim points, can be found here, and formatting instructions can be found in hidden comments on the page. A bot will then update the main table, which can be seen on the WikiCup page. The full rules for what will and will not be awarded points can be found at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. There's also a section on that page listing the changes that have been made to the rules this year, so that experienced participants can get up-to-date in a few seconds. One point of which we must remind everyone; you may only claim points for content upon which you have done significant work, and which you have nominated, in 2012. For instance, articles written or good article reviews started in 2011 are not eligible for points.

This round will last until late February, and signups will remain open until the middle of February. If you know of anyone who may like to take part, please let them know about the comeptition; the more the merrier! At the end of this round, the top 64 scorers will progress to the next round, where their scores will reset, and they will be split into pools. Note that, by default, you have been added to our newsletter list; we will be in contact at the end of every month with news. You're welcome to remove yourself from this list if you do not wish to hear from us. Conversely, those interested in following the competition are more than welcome to add themselves to the list. Please direct any questions towards the judges, or on the WikiCup talk page. Good luck! J Milburn (talk) and The ed17 (talk) 17:50, 31 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi BigDom, question about William Tait (footballer)

[edit]

I saw that you created the article for William Tait (footballer), who played for Newton Heath (Manchester United), Now I was wondered if you sure his first name is actually William and if he is the same person who played for Newton Heath. I tried searching MUFC database and none actually knew his first name. nor any major info on that case. if you could shed some light on the issue it would be amazing. Thank you.
  – HonorTheKing (talk) 05:19, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for asking. I think that I initially created the article from Michael Joyce's Football League Players' Records which simply lists him as "Tait, W" (5 apps, 4 gls) and lists his other clubs as Newton Heath, West Manchester and Ardwick. When I acquired the Burnley FC history book (the one that's referenced in the article) it gave his name as "William Tait" and showed that he had scored 5 goals rather than 4 so that's where the article title and the infobox stats come from. The book confirms that he was signed from Newton Heath in August 1888. Indeed, after the second match of the 1888–89 season the local newspaper (from where the book takes its information) states that a hat-trick, the first ever scored in the Football League, was scored by a William Tait. According to the book Tait left Burnley in Oct 1888, but it says nothing about his career thereafter. Hope this helps, BigDom 10:30, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the information. I know as a fact that he signed in Newton Heath in late 1888, and scored twice in November 1888 in the Football Alliance, but now I also understand that he played in Newton Heath prior to that before joining Burnley, so maybe a short loan or short spell?, but never the less he most be the same player. Thank you so much. now I know his first name!, .

Hi. I'm afraid I have removed the two good article reviews for which you have claimed points. They are not particularly extensive, and while they technically well over the 1kb line in the sand, this is mostly from the use of templates, rather than because of critical review. I am not claiming that these are poor reviews- I have not looked at the articles and so have no opinion on that matter and realise that very short reviews are often perfectly good- only saying that they are not eligible for WikiCup points. If you have any questions, please contact me on my talk page. J Milburn (talk) 15:51, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. In your recent article edits, you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Apologies for the lateness of this letter; our usual bot wasn't working. We are now entering round 4, our semi-finals, and have our final 16. A score of 243 was required to reach this round; significantly more than 2011's 76 points, and only a little behind 2010's 250 points. By comparison, last year, 150 points in round 4 secured a place in the final; in 2010, 430 were needed. Commiserations to Pool A's Minas Gerais igordebraga (submissions), who scored 242 points, missing out on a place in the round by a whisker. However, congratulations to Pool B's Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions), whose television articles have brought him another round victory. Pool A's Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came second overall, with an impressive list of biological did you knows, good articles and featured articles. Third overall was Pool D's New York City Muboshgu (submissions), with a long list of contibutions, mostly relating to baseball. Of course, with the points resetting every round, the playing field has been levelled. The most successful Pool was Pool D, which saw seven into the final round. Pool B saw four, C saw three and Pool A saw only the two round leaders.

A quick note about other competitions taking place on Wikipedia which may be of interest. There are 13 days remaining in the June-July GAN backlog elimination drive, but it is not too late to take part. August will also see the return of The Core Contest- a one month long competition first run in 2007. While the WikiCup awards points for audited content on any subject, The Core Contest about is raw article improvement, focussing heavily on the most important articles on Wikipedia. As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck!
