National Parks

[edit]

I started creating a template at User:Ivanvector/Image Commons links inline with a test page at User:Ivanvector/Image Commons link test, for trying to come up with something for a reusable template with Commons/WLE links inline. I got about as far as I'm able with my (poor) knowledge of template syntax. I also tried to parse de:Vorlage:Naturdenkmal Österreich Tabellenzeile but didn't get very far. If you want to take a look and tinker around with these pages, please feel free. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 16:12, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Ivanvector: Thanks for starting to write a template! :-) Yes, the template on de-wp is pretty complicated unfortunately, but I'll try and add an upload link in the coming days. One other remark: Those "width" make sense here? Depending on the screen size, setting a specific px-width will result in a picture too small or too big for the screen, but if this isn't doable any other it's not that of a problem. Braveheart (talk) 07:52, 12 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not exactly sure what you're asking, but yes we do use width here. I coded the template to accept an imagewidth parameter, or set width to 175px if none is specified. If you don't pass a width when calling an image I think you get the image at its full size, which would be quite variable and for featured images quite large. And there is the concern about how things look on different size screens which I don't think we can solve dynamically (so that widths adjust to the user's screen size, for example). My solution has been to hard-code the column widths of information I don't want to wrap, or force it to wrap sensibly with line breaks, and leave one or two text columns (descriptions are good for this) without a specified width so that they automatically adjust based on screen size. Although I notice just now that the National Parks of Canada list isn't coded that way. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 14:24, 12 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that was my question, thanks for answering it, that sounds ok to me :-) And yes, the list of National Parks of Canada could use that kind of template, as would the other lists for the provincial parks. Would make generating/adding lists and parameters easier than having to edit 15+ lists every time something changes. Braveheart (talk) 08:51, 13 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Pressburg

[edit]

I apologize if my edit summary was too brusque. I just feel that redirecting to the "History of" page is non-standard and deserves further discussion before being restored. I didn't have Talk:Bratislava on my watchlist so I didn't see your earlier comment. Rublov (talk) 15:26, 15 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Rublov: I'm not sure how case like this one are handled on en.wp, maybe redirecting it to the history chapter of the main article works too? The main point is that even in German the name of the city is Bratislava and not Pressburg, because of the renaming of the city in 1919, while Katowice for example was never renamed. I wouldn't be as drastic as splitting the article like in Königsberg and Kaliningrad, but it is also a case of renaming. BR, Braveheart (talk) 17:03, 15 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I see your point about how Pressburg/Bratislava differs from the examples I gave. Let me do a canvas of similar cases on Wikipedia (e.g., Bombay/Mumbai) and I'll post an update to Talk:Bratislava. If things are still unclear we can take it to WP:RFD. Rublov (talk) 22:29, 15 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
P.S.: It is also a bit ironic that I'm the one having to seek consensus when there was no consensus beforehand for the initial change. The only user responding on the talk page has now been banned indefinitely for his biased edits. Braveheart (talk) 17:04, 15 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
As a gesture of good faith I've restored your edit while we discuss. Rublov (talk) 22:32, 15 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited History of Malta, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Raison d'être. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)
