John Ogdon and Rachmaninoff

[edit]

Hi there, Musikverein. This link that I found by googling suggests he recorded most of Rachmaninoff's piano works, but not all of them. The Moments Musicals, Op.16, for example, are not listed, and neither are the 3rd or 4th Concertos. I'll make a correction and you can have a look and edit it as appropriate. -- JackofOz 04:16, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your prompt response, Jack, and also for resolving the matter. Great job on the edit, too.MUSIKVEREIN 15:01, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Stop ABUSE from MUSIKVEREIN, THD3 or whatever user.

1. Stop ABUSE from MUSIKVEREIN, THD3 concerning content quality. See my previous summaries for changes. Avoid non verified sources, they must be deleted, particularly any unreliable "copies of copies" and "references with references with references". What is more, this page must not be used for non verified claims from whatever community. There already were court charges and research on false copies of letters or false letters, dubious Web pages and so forth (Sviatoslav Richter had a clear and consequent stance concerning his life and privacy, and morally speaking it is more honest to refer to that).

2. Stop ABUSIVELY USING this page for any communities’ / community's claims: even the section "trivia" is discouraged and this page is not about hetero- or homosexuality, particularly not the body part of the page.

3. Any reference to Horowitz or whomever is absolutely of no interest and no use. Do not change subjects. We are not discussing him or pages concerning him. Hypothetically there might be abuse on those other pages, too.

4. Searching for I.P. addresses or user locations is a doubtful and generally speaking, a useless activity for well-intentioned users when it comes to well-intentioned users.

Richter

[edit]

I've done a little investigating. The IP address for 88.218.172.3 apparently indicates a user in Athens, Greece. That explains the poor use of English. I'm not sure how to request someone be blocked, but a warning from an administrator is required first. I can check into it but won't be back until later in the day.THD3 14:11, 11 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Here we go again! Steiner_redlich and Francorussie are the same person, this was admitted on Francorussie's talk page. They should both be blocked, and we may have to consider a request to lock the page until this dispute simmers down. The user has an agenda, but he's trying to hang it on Salon.com not being a reliable source, which is bunk. If he wants more references, I have a copy of the collected letters of Igor Stravinsky which references Richter's sexuality.THD3 (talk) 22:25, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's right, THD3. I suspect this Steiner fellow is also behind user 82.124.131.159: same wording of complaints, same style. I can also contribute with a couple of sources on Richter's sexuality to buttress the point, should that be needed. Steiner Redlich has received warning messages from you, Emerson7 and myself, has even been blocked for 48 hours, but is still at his disruptive game. You have my full support for any action - blocking him, locking the page, etc. - you want to take in connection with this issue. Regards, MUSIKVEREIN (talk) 02:00, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I just added another reference regarding Richter. I don't imagine this will deter Steiner_redlich. He obviously feels very passionately about this issue. In the end, this will probably just boil down to blocking him and his sockpuppet.THD3 (talk) 12:32, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that it is time to ask for some kind of lock for the Richter page. Let me know if my support would help. Paul (User:Lpgeffen) (talk) 01:57, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Steiner_redlich is out of control. He not only reverted the last edit, but added an irrelevent paragraph. I restored the article and added the exact quote from Stravinsky's correspondence. I have left a final warning on Steiner's talkpage. It's time to put this to an end. One more reversion by him, and I will request a permanent block and a temporary lock to the Richter page. Are you guys with me?THD3 (talk) 13:35, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can you walk me through how to request a block on our friend?THD3 (talk) 12:28, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've added the request to block him at this page: [[1]] If you could add your voice, we might get this problem resolved.THD3 (talk) 00:30, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Novais

[edit]

The rules of other languages are not an argument. As far as the orthography of the Portuguese language is concerned, you should read the current Formulário Ortográfico da Língua Portuguesa. I also suggest the explanation that the biggest biographical work in Portuguese, Dicionário Histórico-Biográfico Brasileiro, gives in this matter. If you read Portuguese, please take a look here. Dantadd 19:44, 14 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the feedback. Well, the statement "Para salvaguardar direitos individuais, quem o quiser manterá em sua assinatura a forma consuetudinária" implies that in the signature the names can be kept as they were originally, but not the transcription in an encyclopedia, there's clear difference between a primary source and a secondary or tertiary edition, that's exactly what does the prestigious Dicionário Histórico-Biográfico Brasileiro or the Galeria dos Brasileiros Ilustres. I understand that it seems "odd", but that's the rule in the Portuguese language, even if a lot of people ignores it. And the rules apply even to the names of people born after the last orthographic reform. As an encyclopedia, Wikipedia should use the same criteria. In paleography or transcription of primary sources, the names can be kept in the original form, as Luís de Camões once was "Luiz de Camoens" or Dom Afonso Henriques was "Don Affõso Hẽrriques". Musikverein, thanks for your message. I've re-opened the debate at User talk:Dantadd. Cheers. -- JackofOz (talk) 13:42, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Vienna Philharmonic

[edit]

Hello--to answer your question, I'm not sure it does translate: "the Viennese Philharmonickers"?? The German idiom customarily refers to the musicians who make up the group, rather than the group itself (cf. "die Berliner Philharmoniker"). Thanks for not changing it--if nothing else, the article ("die") should stay, otherwise the phrase is incomplete. Cbrodersen (talk) 19:44, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pele

[edit]

Thank you for yr return and corrections —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cybershore (talkcontribs) 01:24, 15 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for contacting me regarding the Edison/Edson debate. I am at this very moment working in collaboration with Pele on an authorized book that takes in his early life and times.. He insists on me calling him Edson in our conversations (he refers to Pele in the third person). As he is the greatest footballer of all time, I think we should make it clear in his Wikipedia entry that he considers himself to be Edson, not Edison. I have made the insertion, and look forward to your comments. Kindest regards Sammypepys (talk) 18:12, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you MUSIKVEREIN for your intelligent input to the Pele debate. I hope you think my addition of the line ... "While his birth certificate shows his first name as Edison (after the American inventor), he prefers to call himself Edson. But it is as Pelé that he has become a sporting legend" covers the topic in a fair manner. John Ogdon and Pele on the same page! You are obviously a man of many tastes and talents. Kindest regardsSammypepys (talk) 22:54, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hopefully it will not be edited out by somebody lacking in your understanding. You don't know how I envy you your musical knowledge and appreciation. I am a boring walking record book on sport and have been lucky to collaborate on books with many of the major stars, including Pele. But I would swap them all to be able to play Chopin and Rachmaninov. Best wishes to you Sammypepys (talk) 14:28, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

We must not turn this into a competition MUSIKVEREIN, but I would give my right hand to play the piano like John Ogdon (or more so Oscar Peterson ... I am a jazz fanatic). You have risked only a finger. Thanks for your good humour. Sammypepys (talk) 21:25, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

One of my few claims to fame is that I am the worst jazz pianist in the world. I try to play like Art Tatum but am more like his brother Arthritic (which is like a joke). We must stop meeting like this! Sammypepys (talk) 18:24, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bruckner pictures

[edit]
For his Ninth, it totally makes sense to use a picture from his final years. He was no spring chicken when he wrote his Study Symphony in F minor, but still it seems slightly incongruous to me to use a picture of him much older. And since Wikipedia already has pictures of him younger, I thought it made sense to use them. Anton Mravcek (talk) 20:46, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, mate. Welcome to Oz. How long are you here for? I don't suppose you're heading down my way (a long day's drive; or an hour's flight to Melbourne, followed by a 2-3 hour drive). -- JackofOz (talk) 05:56, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pity. Maybe I'll get across to Germany next year and we can meet up there. You've done a couple of more things than I have in Sydney, so congratulations on a fun-filled week. The shakuhachi concert - was Riley Lee (WHAT??? No article???) part of it? I've heard him lots of times (on radio, never live ... yet). Cheers, and give my regards to my Kiwi cousins. -- JackofOz (talk) 06:44, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Good reversion on the Arrau page. I just looked it over and realized how poorly the page is written. I'm touching it up to tone it down a bit. If you have any suggestions, let me know on my talk page. Hope all is well with you.THD3 (talk) 16:04, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent idea. I removed those "pupils" listed who didn't have active wikilinks, and left the rest. I'm still rather dubious, because almost anyone can say he/she "studied" with someone, and I think a lot of these small-fry pianists add their own names to the article to gain some cachet.THD3 (talk) 20:47, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I met him. It's pronounced "HUFF." But personal experience can't be used at Wikipedia. Hope you're well.THD3 (talk) 18:39, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

He's a very nice guy. We had a rather wide ranging discussion about Rachmaninoff, and whether he was related to the Cleveland Hough family, which ran a large chain of bakeries (he's not).THD3 (talk) 12:12, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I had lunch with Stephen about a month ago. Afterward, we walked around the neighborhood and I snapped a photo of him (using his camera) underneath a Hough Bakeries sign. I was hoping to add it to his bio article, but the background is too cluttered. Anyway, since he and I correspond and are acquainted, I'd appreciate it if you could watch over his page - I don't want to get caught up on a potential conflict of interest. It's still on my watchlist, but I'm only guarding against vandalism. With the relative implosion of Perahia's career, I think Hough, Hamelin and Zsolt Bognar (who does not have a Wikipedia article) are my favorite living pianists.THD3 (talk) 15:22, 31 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I finally got around to adding that photo to Hough's page - I cropped it a bit. It's still not optimal, but acceptable until someone gets a better one.THD3 (talk) 14:56, 5 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

User:87.250.43.136

[edit]

I've reported User:87.250.43.136 for abuse. In addition to vandalising the Horowitz and Richter pages, he defaced at article on Scott O'Grady and left an inappropriate remark directed at me on his talk page (he requested a sexual act from me). Hopefully, he'll be blocked this time.THD3 (talk) 13:15, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You should check his response on the Richter page. It's a hoot! I've responded as cogently as I can at this early hour. He accuses us of the "crime" of being American and/or Jewish. You're from South America, correct? I wonder if he considers that too American?THD3 (talk) 11:18, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

regarding me

[edit]
It must be explained that Richter was better than Horowitz, cause he was and only a deaf person can not tell. Regarding O'Grady, article says he had eaten ants to survive, I made a joke with it. Have you ever heard of Formic acid? It is a NON SENSE that ants can be used as a food because they generate this acid and are full of it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.250.43.136 (talk) 22:09, 7 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Vladimir Horowitz

[edit]

You are invited to participate in a discussion going on at the Horowitz talk page regarding the Ukrainian/Russian question, which is being driven by ClassicalMusica, who appears to be a single purpose editor.THD3 (talk) 13:27, 3 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks much for your help.THD3 (talk) 19:42, 3 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your assistance with the article. I really don't care whether Horowitz is listed as Russian, Ukranian, American, or Martian. But I don't want the article bogged down with qualifying statements which is where the other authors were leading us - I much prefer conciseness. It seems that over the past few weeks, we've had a popping up of editors who are approaching this page with an agenda. Namely, User:Galassi User:Bandurist User:ClassicalMusica. I can't help but wonder if they're the same person, as their editing history is similar - although not identical. User:Galassi is waging an edit war trying to weasel down the section on Horowitz's sexuality. Have a great weekend.THD3 (talk) 12:11, 5 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. User:Galassi seems to have calmed down after I dug up some old books in my library and gave some citations with page numbers. Thanks for your compliments on my reviews. I've been informed that Sony/BMG is releasing their entire Horowitz collection as part of the Original Jackets series in November. The pianist's 1986 Berlin recital is also being released, but apparently only in Germany. Oh, if you want to PM me, check my Amazon page. If you're on my Amazon friends list, you can get my email address.THD3 (talk) 20:10, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for contributing the the Kiev/Berdichev discussion on the Horowitz page. I was offline for much of the weekend. Just an FYI, Schonberg's book on Horowitz is loaded with errors. (The Berdichev error is understandable since the documents would not have been available to Westerners at that time.) But he did very little research aside from his interviews with Horowitz (who sometimes had a selective memory) and reading his own NY Times reviews - which he quoted liberally throughout the book. For one thing, Schonberg gets the chronology of Horowitz's separation from Wanda wrong, stating it ended with the pianist's nervious breakdown in early 1953, when in fact they were back together by the fall of 1951, when Horowitz toured England and France. I am wrapping up another chapter in my Horowitz tome and will send it to you for preview.THD3 (talk) 15:07, 14 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Edison

[edit]

Musikverein, I´d like to ask you if you know any other reference to Pelé´s birth certificate, on which it´s spelled "Edison", appart from the movie "Pelé Eterno". Cheers. Tonyjeff (talk) 13:31, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! At Spanish WP, they do not accept the movie Pele Eterno as a reliable source (I cannot explain why). I've reached the register of Três Corações and they confirmed that, at his birth certificate, it is spelled "Edison" (and the book, number and page of the birth certificate are the same ones informed at Pelé Eterno). Also, anyone may request a copy of his certificate paying R$35,00.
Well, now this is it: reach the registry of Três Corações and buy a copy of his birth certificate would be "original research". But all of it confirms the informations given at Pelé Eterno, which is not primary source. If there was any other source, a book or magazine, saying something about his real name, would be great (just to shut up the Doubting Thomases). If you come by anything, just give me a call. Best regards!!! --Tonyjeff (talk) 20:36, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

g==Big Five (orchestras)== Hi. I have nominated the above article for deletion. I welcome your input, pro or con, here.THD3 (talk) 12:56, 16 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate that you're watching this page. Recently, there have been some very strange things going on there. User:Darrenmichaelman (the name is an anagram of Marc-André Hamelin) made some hyperbolic, promotional edits which I reverted. Then, anonymous editor added a rather romanticized photo of Hamelin in profile. I removed the photo from the article because is was too wide, Halemin's face was off center, and it was facing away from the article. I sent a note to the editor explaining how to fix it. Rob MacAlear is certainly within his bounds to remove his 2003 photo of Hamelin. But the newer photo, without some modification, is not appropriate to a bio article.THD3 (talk) 15:07, 31 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help with Marc-André Hamelin Discography. I think it's nearly ready to add a link to Hamelin's article. Just one note: be careful when you're adding information to the template. It needs to end with a verticle line and closing bracket (the reverse of how it starts). Otherwise, the template gets placed in the wrong part of the page. I will be on vacation and away from Wikipedia September 11-16. Cheers!THD3 (talk) 12:57, 9 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bruder Martin

[edit]

A source for de:Bruder Jacob on Mahler's first symphony ? Sorry, but we'd rather need a source for Bruder Martin : never heard that, while I was singing Bruder Jacob when I was 8 years old... To me, this Bruder Martin thing is probably some vandalism, and it's weird I'm the one who has to provide a source.

OK, this is plain ridiculous, but here's the requested source, found after less than 10 seconds of googling : http://www.la-belle-epoque.de/mahler/sinf01_d.htm. Quoting : "Der 3. Satz ist der eigentliche Höhepunkt der Sinfonie: Basierend auf dem bekannten Volkslied "Bruder Jakob" (...)".

== Hartenhof, what I mean is very simple: the construction "have also been" (as opposed to "had also been", which wasn't used here) includes the present tense, that is, the "still are" that you mentioned.
