Control copyright icon Hello Onyebuchi Echezona! Your additions to Economic history of Nigeria have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 23:11, 10 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I'm Qwerfjkl (bot). I have automatically detected that this edit performed by you, on the page Climate change and gender, may have introduced referencing errors. They are as follows:

  • A "bare URL and missing title" error. References show this error when they do not have a title. Please edit the article to add the appropriate title parameter to the reference. (Fix | Ask for help)

Please check this page and fix the errors highlighted. If you think this is a false positive, you can report it to my operator. Thanks, Qwerfjkl (bot) (talk) 22:26, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, as you did to Gender reveal party. Wikipedia is not a collection of links, nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Inappropriate links include, but are not limited to, links to personal websites, links to websites with which you are affiliated (whether as a link in article text, or a citation in an article), and links that attract visitors to a website or promote a product. See the external links guideline and spam guideline for further explanations. Because Wikipedia uses the nofollow attribute value, its external links are disregarded by most search engines. If you feel the link should be added to the page, please discuss it on the associated talk page rather than re-adding it. Thank you. Belbury (talk) 09:17, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright problem icon Your edit to Gender self-identification has been removed in whole or in part, as it appears to have added copyrighted material to Wikipedia without evidence of permission from the copyright holder. If you are the copyright holder, please read Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for more information on uploading your material to Wikipedia. For legal reasons, Wikipedia cannot accept copyrighted material, including text or images from print publications or from other websites, without an appropriate and verifiable license. All such contributions will be deleted. You may use external websites or publications as a source of information, but not as a source of content, such as sentences or images—you must write using your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously, and persistent violators of our copyright policy will be blocked from editing. See Wikipedia:Copying text from other sources for more information. gnu57 18:41, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Warning icon Please stop. If you continue to use disruptive, inappropriate or hard-to-read formatting, as you did at Sex–gender distinction, you may be blocked from editing. Information icon Hi Onyebuchi Echezona! I noticed that you recently marked an edit as minor that may not have been. "Minor edit" has a very specific definition on Wikipedia—it refers only to superficial edits that could never be the subject of a dispute, such as typo corrections or reverting obvious vandalism. Any edit that changes the meaning of an article is not a minor edit, even if it only concerns a single word. Please see Help:Minor edit for more information. Thank you. Welcome, and let's do a reboot and get you onto the right path

[edit]

Hi, Onyebuchi Echezona, and welcome. I see that you made a few edits a year ago, but you're still a very new user, so I wanted to add my welcome to you to Wikipedia. I can see that even though you're a new user, you've already figured out how to write proper citations, including using some of the citation templates, and add them to articles, so bravo for that, and thanks very much for helping to uphold Wikipedia's key policy of WP:Verifiability.

But I see that you had some difficulty with some of your early edits being undone, and unfortunately this is repeating itself as I had to undo or modify a dozen of your recent edits for reasons that I'd like to explain to you. There were some common themes in the edits of yours that were later removed by myself or other editors:

  • they were made mostly to the WP:LEAD (the part of the article above the Table of contents and the first section header).
  • they were mostly in articles on gender-related topics;
  • they mostly involved adding significant content to the article, and not just small fixes as found in typical newcomer tasks.

It's little wonder that many of your edits were undone, as this is a veritable trifecta (triple-play, hat trick) of difficulty that is not easy even for a very experienced user, and is nearly impossible for someone just starting out, especially when they combined all three in one edit.

The WP:LEAD of an article has special rules that pertain to it, and new users are well-advised to edit solely in the body portion of articles (after the first section header, below the table of contents) until you get more experience. Articles on gender-related topics are considered a controversial topic area, and the entire article is under a special, stricter set of rules that even experienced editors need to pay special attention to, and once again, on top of all the other new rules a new editor has to become accustomed to, having to pay attention to the special rules on controversial topics is just too much. Finally, adding significant content to an article, which normally happens first in the body of the article, not the lead, is more difficult than the typical newcomer task, which usually will start you off with smaller edits involving grammar and spelling changes, punctuation, and that sort of thing, while you acquire a basic skill set and can move on to the next level.

To give you some concrete examples: when writing new content, you have to write in your own words, summarizing the main points of the source you are reading. This doesn't mean just shifting the words around in the sentence, or swapping some words for synonyms; that is still a type of copyright violation, and is called WP:CLOSEPARAPHRASE. A couple of examples of this are your edits to Child pornography and Gender sensitization, which were removed for this reason. There were numerous examples of new, detailed content being added to the lead that just didn't belong there, such as at Gender dysphoria, where you doubled the lead to eight paragraphs (recommended size is four or fewer), adding detailed, unique content not covered in the body, or similarly at Gender quota. In some cases, like the paragraph at Gender expression, it was material added to the lead that didn't belong in the article and might fit better in another article. There were some problems with references, which appeared well-formed, but were hung in space after the lead (e.g., the Victoria State Edu. Dept. ref in Child grooming; moved it to the "Further reading" section), or which added a sixth reference to a sentence that already had five of them (Climate change and gender), or that was placed before the first sentence (Child protection). In one case, you added duplicate content already in the article (Commission for Gender Equality).

There's more, but the key theme here is that you're kind of punching above your weight, and getting a bit lost. If I were you, I'd try a reboot: start over, read the links in your welcome message, maybe sign up with a mentor or take the tutorial or do the Adventure game/tutorial. Here are several concrete suggestions to help you as well, which you can follow or not as you wish, but I think they will help avoid future problems:

  1. Stay away from the lead of all articles for now, full stop. Do make edits to the article body, i.e., the part below the first section header or the table of contents.
  2. Don't edit in controversial topic areas. This includes all gender-related articles, as well as some other topic areas. Do edit articles in your areas of interest, or try hitting the "Random article" link, or sign up with a WP:WikiProject in a topic of interest to you; they'll be happy to suggest articles to you.
  3. If you add new content to articles, make sure it's relevant to the article (the title tells you what the article is about), in due proportion to the sources and the balance of article content, and located in the right section. Keep adding citations for any content, as you have been; remember that the <ref> tag goes right up against the end of the sentence or paragraph, after the punctuation, and with no blanks between.

I hope this helps, and I'd like to invite you to the Wikipedia:Tea house, and the WP:Help desk, where you will find many volunteers ready and willing to answer your questions about editing Wikipedia. You are also welcome to contact me on my Talk page any time you have questions. Cheers, Mathglot (talk) 09:39, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I can tell from your edits that you are trying to contribute positively to the encyclopedia, but you are not succeeding. I have reverted another five edits of yours to gender-related articles, and User:CaptainEek has undone several more, for similar reasons. Please have a look at the previous section, where I tried to give you some tips about how to improve your editing. I have to inform you now, that if you continue editing articles in the same way you have been, especially when they are in gender-related topics, this may be seen as WP:DISRUPTIVE, and could expose you to sanctions, including limitations on your editing topics, or restriction of your editing privileges. Please respond, so that I know you have read this message. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 11:45, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction to contentious topics

[edit]

You have recently been editing gender-related disputes or controversies or people associated with them, which has been designated a contentious topic. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially-designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template. Mathglot (talk) 11:46, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Writing encyclopedic content

[edit]

Thanks for your contribution to Sibling abuse. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and unfortunately, I had to undo your edit because it read too much like a how-to guide for parents, which is not what Wikipedia is about. Please ensure that all your contributions are encyclopedic, and fit with Wikpedia's mission. If you have any questions about editing Wikipedia, you can ask at the Wikipedia:Help desk, or feel free to contact me at my Talk page. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 00:23, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Control copyright icon Hello Onyebuchi Echezona! We welcome and appreciate your contributions, such as Tree-free paper, but we regretfully cannot accept copyrighted material from other websites or printed works. This article appears to contain work copied from https://www.dovetailinc.org/upload/tmp/1580141175.pdf, and therefore to constitute a violation of Wikipedia's copyright policies. The copyrighted text has been or will soon be deleted. While we appreciate your contributions, copying content from other websites is unlawful and against Wikipedia's copyright policy. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously, and persistent violators are likely to lose their editing privileges.

If you believe that the article is not a copyright violation, or if you have permission from the copyright holder to release the content freely under license allowed by Wikipedia, then you should do one of the following:

It may also be necessary for the text to be modified to have an encyclopedic tone and to follow Wikipedia article layout. For more information on Wikipedia's policies, see Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.

See Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries for a template of the permissions letter the copyright holder is expected to send.

Information icon Hello, I'm Jurta. I wanted to let you know that one or more of your recent contributions to Ngwo Pine forest have been undone because they appeared to be promotional. Advertising and using Wikipedia as a "soapbox" are against Wikipedia policy and not permitted; Wikipedia articles should be written objectively, using independent sources, and from a neutral perspective. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about Wikipedia. Thank you. Jurta talk/he/they 17:09, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Your addition has been removed or altered, as it appears to closely paraphrase a copyrighted source. Limited close paraphrasing or quotation is appropriate within reason, so long as the material is clearly attributed in the text. However, longer paraphrases which are not attributed to their source may constitute copyright violation or plagiarism, and are not acceptable on Wikipedia. Such content cannot be hosted here for legal reasons; please do not post it on any page, even if you plan to fix it later. You may use external websites or printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If you own the copyright to the text, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use it — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the copyright but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. You have been warned again and again about copyright issues, but proceed in the same problematic way anyway. You are very likely to be indefinitely blocked either now or after the next incident. Request reason:

I see that I have been blocked for copyright violations. I am sorry about that. When initially warned about copyright violation, I started making sure I provided citations for every sentence or text I added to wikipedia. I have recently not added any photo to my edits, just texts. And I provide citations and references to all texts that I add. It will be helpful to know what else I need to start doing to prevent copyright violation, apart from adding citations to all text that I add to wikipedia. I personally have read the copyright policy thoroughly since I was blocked and I would love to keep contributing to wikipedia. I apologise again. Onyebuchi Echezona (talk) 03:26, 16 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

As copyright violations potentially put Wikipedia in legal jeopardy, we must be convinced that you will not make copyright violations again in the future. Please tell us in your own words what copyright is, what Wikipedia's copyright is, and when and how copyrighted content may be used on Wikipedia. If you haven't read it already, please read the links provided in the block notice above. I am declining your request. 331dot (talk) 09:23, 16 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

I have read it now. In my own words, copyright is a legal protection that is given to someone who owns a book, song, or other creative contents, so that other people do not use the content without first taking permission or attributing the original creator/owner of the content. Wikipedia copyright are those legal framework and licensing terms under which contents on Wikipedia is created, shared, and reused. These licenses allow others to reuse and modify Wikipedia content, provided they adhere to specific conditions such as making proper attribution and licensing of derivative works under the same legal terms. Copyrighted content can be used on wikipedia when the contributor has the permission of the owner of the content that the contributor intend using on wikipedia or when the content that the contributor intends to use is from a source that is in the public domain and have compatible licensing. The contributor can make short quotations if it is in line with Wikipedia's non free content policy and guideline. Except the contributor have the permission of the original author, he cannot copy the text to wikipedia if there is a similarity in the creative language and sentence structure of the original text. This is known as close paraphrasing. Excessive close paraphrasing amounts to wikipedia copyright violation. To use copyrighted content, like text on wikipedia, the contributor must rewrite it in their own words and properly credit the authour or authours of the content, using intext attribution. Onyebuchi Echezona (talk) 06:40, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

Your answers are not generally correct. It is not sufficient to attribute the original creator of the content, for example. Nor is it sufficient to get permission to use content on Wikipedia. Additionally, you don't seem to understand what public domain content is. Additionally, you have missed all of WP:FAIRUSE. You are nowhere close to understanding Wikipedia's policies on copyright and fair use, I'm afraid. Yamla (talk) 10:28, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

Public domain contents are contents which are no longer protected by copyright, and it is freely available for anyone to use, share, modify, and distribute without restrictions. They are no longer protected by copyright because those rights may have expired, been forfeited, expressly waived, or may be inapplicable. For such creative works anyone can legally use or reference them without the permission because no one holds the exclusive rights. In the public domain, there are no copyright claims, and the work is considered part of the common cultural and intellectual heritage, allowing it to be used for various purposes, including education, research, creative projects, and more, without the need for permission or licensing. A creative work is not said to be in public domain in a situations where the creator of a work retains residual rights, in which case use of the work is referred to as "under license" or "with permission". In this case, the creative content can be said to be a Non-free content. Fair use is a legal doctrine that allows the limited use of copyrighted material without the copyright owner's permission. Fair use is one of the limitations to copyright intended to balance the interests of copyright holders with the public interest in the wider distribution and use of creative works. It is a crucial exception to copyright protection, designed to balance the rights of creators with the public's interest in free expression, education, commentary, and other socially valuable activities. The fair use doctine is very important and necessary because if the doctrine was not established, copyright law will becoming overly strict and kill the creativity that copyright law aims to encourage in the first place. Wikipedia however has its own Fair Use Criteria, hence WP:FAIRUSE. As I have now explained the above concepts of "Public Domain Content" and "WP Free Use" in my own word to demonstrate my understanding of the concepts, i will answer again the question of "when and how copyrighted content may be used on wikipedia". First I understand that wikipedia wants me to make use of free contents while contributing to wikipedia because the goal of wikipedia is to be a free content encyclopedia. Free contents can mean contents that are in the public domain or public sphere (I perfectly understand the concept of public domain as i have explained earlier above in my own words). However, I am allowed to use copyrighted works or Non-free contents legally on wikipedia without requiring permission in certain situations in a manner that doing so falls within the United States legal doctrine of fair use (I perfectly understand the concept of fair use as i have explained earlier in my own words). I also understand that wikipedia has its own Fair Use Criteria which I have read. The WP Fair Use Policy gave 10 criteria for which non-free contents which includes copyrighted images, audio and video clips, and other media files that lack a free content license can be used. I also read and understood the Guideline for the acceptable use of non-free text. To use non-free text or copyrighted text on wikipedia, I must make brief quotations of the copyrighted text used with an intention to illustrate a point, establish context, or attribute a point of view or idea, and every time I do this, I must include an in-text citation immediately after the quoted text. When I use copyrighted text verbatim, I must make attribution it by using quotation marks or other accepted formatting, such as block quotes. Any alterations or changes made must be clearly marked, with "brackets" if I added a text, an ellipsis (...) if I removed a text and and emphasis noted after the quotation as "(emphasis added)" or "(emphasis in the original)". I must not make an excessive or extensive quotation as this is highly prohibited on Wikipedia. I can now see clearly how i mixed things up in my last appeal especially with "Copyrighted Content" and "Public Domain". Onyebuchi Echezona (talk) 00:44, 22 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

In your requests you are still not showing how you understand how to write a Wikipedia article or contribute to one while remaining within copyright restrictions. I would like to see you write a piece of text you would add to an article, for example, Fertilizer tree, that meets our copyright policies and the law, so that an admin can see you can demonstrate the ability to process what our policies and the law mean and how they interact. I have used that article as it is one you edited before and is one where you breached copyright law and our policies. Your reply currently doesn't indicate that you understand how to paraphrase copyrighted material, as it only deals with quoting and otherwise using public domain material. Buchi. How do you do? I recently reviewed Ecotourism in Nigeria and I love the subject you created. But, Wikipedia is not a place for your academic paper writing prowess exhibition. Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia for understanding of things that may seem to bogus; this is achieved by the use of less jargons in articles.

Away from that, let me explain copyright: If the source says, "Obi is a boy who resides in Enugu, in 1987, he journey across one thousand seas and ten thousand monsters to get there." You are meant to summarise this in your OWN words then added a citation. I want you to assure me that you understand this, then, I'll ping an administrator to look at this. No. I have already reviewed an unblock request from this user. --Yamla (talk) 21:40, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Some of the topics created by this user about Nigeria or Africa are one of a kind (to me excluding the copyright part). Please, @Diannaa, I know I shouldn't be pinging you as we are all volunteers here but, can you look at this unblock request, please? Best, Reading Beans (talk) 00:51, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I also want to add that I'll adopt this user and monitor their edits thoroughly should they be unblocked. Best, Reading Beans (talk) 00:55, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Unblock discussion

[edit]

Copyvio's make me cross-eyed. @Diannaa: OK to unblock? Decline? send to WP:AN. Thanks! -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 07:42, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please consult the blocking admin, user:MER-CDiannaa (talk) 15:07, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MER-C: OK to unblock? -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 16:25, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm obviously not MER-C, but I did most of the work in this editor's CCI (permalink to version before blanking). I'd like to weigh in here, but I don't have time to draft a detailed assessment right now. Would you be alright with holding off until around 06:00 UTC on the 14th? Callitropsis🌲[talk · contribs] 16:36, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Callitropsis: By all means. Gone cross-eyed, so I welcome your opinion. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 16:40, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, the discussion is moot, as the unblock was declined. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 16:42, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have this page watchlisted, so I'll add my assessment if they decide to open another unblock request. The TL;DR version is that the close paraphrasing added by this editor is some of the worst I've ever seen. Callitropsis🌲[talk · contribs] 16:47, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Decline

[edit]
  • I declined, I agree with Callitropsis that the paraphrasing this editor adds to articles is pretty bad, and their unblock requests likewise only paraphrase our policies without showing how they understand the actual policies. Hope that helps. Hiding T 13:17, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
