Help: with User Page for Powderbark2

[edit]

Hello OIC: I'd like to start a User page. Do I qualify for one? There's a note from you on my blank User page that I requested it to be deleted. I don't recall doing that. Help please when you have a chance. Powderbark2 08:19, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop. If you continue to violate your self mandated wikibreak to add content to your user page (see this edit and this one) you may be nominated to RA for Deletion under WP:ICS for forgetting to take a break. Please either cease editing or remove your wikibreak template. aliasd·U·T 09:28, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

should never be taken as prima facie evidence of anything - I once knew one of the DOLA map checkers - all metro maps are indeed insufficient and unreliable as primary source info - GG's are the first stop - they are at least designated and checked within the ambit. Joh

[edit]

A huge amount of the blame for Queensland being such a joke over many decades to the rest of Australia can be attributed to Joh, you should add it to the article with the reference, it's interesting. Cheers, WikiTownsvillian 08:22, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

haha, very good! WikiTownsvillian 08:27, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am very confused. User:Thewinchester and User:CapitalR were in an edit war. Thewinchester claimed CapitalR's edits were pollution. CapitalR claimed Thewinchester was trying to maintain the template as his/her own. Thewinchester claimed consensus was needed for changes. CapitalR claimed he/she was just being bold. I looked over the changes. I agreed with CapitalR. Seven hours later, Thewinchester once again reverted CaptialR's changes. Three minutes later you protected the template. It seems to me that "pollution" is in the eye of the beholder; Thewinchester was trying to protect his/her own template in violation of WP:OWN and acted in violation of WP:3RR. Was I wrong? (I will look for your response here.)—Markles 12:11, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Being bold is taken way too far in many instances. The changes were of no clear benefit to the template, and for such a widely deployed template, I viewed the changes as blatantly disruptive. Major change requires major justification, and definitely some form of consultation prior to engaging in them - although I am one of the major developers of WP:IAP, I wouldn't dream of making major alterations to that template (which has generally been a success in an Australian places context) without seeking a range of opinions both inside and outside the talk page, and giving it a number of days and taking on board other suggestions. As of this moment, not one word has been posted to Template talk:Infobox Government agency justifying the changes. The template has been in use for some time without these changes, it would not hurt anybody for a little bit of discussion to take place and for CapitalR to indicate why he feels dozens of extra fields and mandated image sizes are a good idea. Orderinchaos 12:16, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, I'm really not that bad of a guy. I accept that my changes to the template won't go through with just sheer boldness, so I put together a proposal on the talk page like I was asked to. I think that posting messages to the Infobox and US Agency WikiProjects were acceptable, as those groups of users would be most interested in the edits (if I can't ask them to review it, then who can I ask?). I'd just appreciate it now if we could see what the rest of the community thinks, and if they don't like it, well, I guess I'll move on. I really would like to legitimately use infoboxes in lots of articles, but can't right now because nothing but agencies are supported. Seeing as my creating a new infobox didn't work out, I'd like a chance for edits to the existing infobox to be discussed (otherwise it's impossible to add infoboxes to non-agencies). It really is my goal to solve the actual problem here (not the edit conflict problem, but making an infobox that works for non-agencies). With that said, thank you for your comments on the infobox talk page, as I agree it is a good idea. --CapitalR 05:05, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Explaining your actions?

[edit]

Hi there,

You have deleted four of my legitimate attempts to contact wikipedians local to myself with no explanation. I'm most interested to hear that explanation!

I am a local user as my IP address can verify and I am looking for local people, who themselves have registered on the wikipedians in Bedfordshire group, itself stating:

It has been requested that this category be populated. Please ask users who fall within this category to add themselves to it.

Wikipedians who feel they are connected with Bedfordshire in some way, possibly by living there. This includes Luton.

So as I mentioned in another talk comment, what is the point of wikipedians adding themselves to such a list unless they want to network and communicate with other likeminded individuals with the same interests? I am not randomly spamming people, I am trying to legitimately contact local wikipedians.

How on earth is that something which could be against wikipedia or require you to start deleting all my comments??

81.105.14.60 23:55, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have addressed this user on his talk page. Twenty Years 00:35, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You've misunderstood, TY. This dispute has nothing to do with users adding other users to user categories.
81.105.14.60 posted messages to a number of users asking them to contact him with regards to "a proposal", and leaving an external link to a page containing his phone number. OIC reverted. Apparently he thought this was spamming. I can't argue with that; it certainly looks like spamming to me.
81.105.14.60 has responded that he is not randomly spamming, but has contacted only those users who have added themselves to Category:Wikipedians in Bedfordshire. Evidently he thinks that category was created so that people could opt-in to Bedfordshire-related spam.
Hesperian 01:01, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It is not Bedfordshire-related spam but networking and communicating with wikipedians in my home town. What else is the group for?????????? It is clearly not spam, it has nothing to do with viagra et al. and it was a very select number of messages to wikipedians in my home town I would like to contact. The "external link to a page containing his phone number" was simply a single graphic containing the text of my phone number as 1) I didn't know it was possible to email as I wasn't registered at the time, and 2) I didn't want to type my number in plain text and 3) couldn't get the image to embed inline. I really don't quite get what the big problem here? Have you heard of networking/socialising/not being a hermit? There is a real world out there BTW, in case you missed that memo. 02:36, 3 October 2007 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Puttenhoe wiki (talkcontribs)

John Howard 1988 Asian policy dissent

[edit]

Hi. I thought maybe you would know the names of a couple of people in Howard's shadow cabinet of 1988. In the article: John_Howard#Opposition_years_.281983-1996.29, the paragraph beginning with: Howard's stance on Asian immigration caused divisions within the Liberal Party..., it says Wilson and MacKellar abstained from the vote. We don't have the full names of those MPs, Wilson & MacKellar. Thought you might know, Thanks--Lester 21:45, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

MacKellar would be Michael MacKellar and I'm not sure who Wilson would be. OIC, do you know if Wilson might have been Ian Wilson??? Sarah 22:16, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'll look it up today, the AJPH is a reasonably authoritative source on past (shadow) cabinets and political goings on. Ian Wilson looks likely as the SA wing is historically more moderate. Whatever way, I'll try and get you a good source/clarification :) Orderinchaos 02:48, 7 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The "Wilson" was indeed Ian Wilson (politician). The Hansard of the final vote is here and shows Wilson voting with the Coalition on the motion to close and an amendment by Howard, then not being present for the final vote which followed immediately after. The same is true for Michael Mackellar, and this is also the vote that Steele Hall crossed the floor for. Euryalus 09:43, 7 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your help with that, everyone. Actually, User:Sarah kindly stepped in and added the Wikilinks, so it's done now.--Lester 05:14, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Brisbane areas

[edit]

Happy to help :) Redcliffe, Strathpine, Ipswich, Capalaba, Cleveland and Beenleigh, and Brisbane CBD is probably a good start. I don't get around the northside much, so I can't help you in that regard, but for the Southside you might want to add the Centenary suburbs (although the boarders for that aren't determined). Also, the Indooroopilly/Toowong/Taringa area should be mentioned as part of CBD - it could be slotted into Centenary, but that isn't done often. Better to just refer to it as Indro (etc.)

I really can't think of many other "key suburban centers" you haven't already covered, and all the ones I've given are rather specific and small. Might wanna try asking someone else too, but I hope this helps :) Dihydrogen Monoxide (H2O) 02:24, 7 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding my efforts to standardise Australian ministry pages (e.g. Fourth Howard Ministry), I was planning to have a template for that, which would generate a table (similar to that of the Barton Ministry), and the user could fill in the portfolios when necessary. I don't know how, though! Do you, when you have the time? I know you are busy. Look here: User:Auroranorth/Library/Ministers - it has a list of all the portfolios. Good faith

[edit]

WHo is being unreasonable here? Longhair really should have discussed with his own WIkiProject Australia first before making large scale changes. Reverting is no different. Category:Australian films was fine as it is . Overcategorization is confusing. As for giving me a warning I don't know who you are to think I haven't got as much right to make changes as Longhair The Wild West guy 14:54, 7 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

We sort people, television shows, music, possibly a lot more into subcategories by genre, without any discussion or grief. I don't see any problem with sorting films by country of origin and genre. It's obvious plenty of others do. Thanks OiC BTW for the support at my talk page, though as you can probably tell such messages don't usually warrant any reply. There's work to do rather than add to more WikiDrama around this place. The way some carry on you'd think I'd straightened up the Leaning Tower of Pisa or something :) -- Longhair\talk 22:01, 7 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, be careful being up this early (even earlier in WA). People might start calling you "productive and active" :) Thanks. -- Longhair\talk 22:25, 7 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

ExtraDry

[edit]

You may be interested to know that when you removed the inappropriate template placed by ExtraDry on the John Waterhouse (headmaster) deletion page and explained why, it was immediately reverted by ExtraDry. This situation is absurd and it has now led me to behave in a less than desirable fashion but I can assure the it is not tit for tat on deletions. I don't think any user has called for the deletion of an article that ExtrDry has written or worked on but you can see how many disruptive calls for deletion ExtrDry has made. Thnks for your usually fair handed commentary on this issue. Mitchplusone 08:28, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Would you mind removing the same template added in the disruptive call for deletion of William Henry Williams and I will remove my comments as I have done on John Waterhouse (headmaster). Thanks Mitchplusone 11:18, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your further comment on my talkpage. It has become very frustrating dealing with this issue as those who seem to be reasonable have now shied away because of the ownership of the article by a very determined user. So much good copy is just trashed time and time again with spurious expalantaions or no explanation at all. Anyway I will make every effort to remain civil from now on and if you don't mind I might ask for your opinion from time to time. Mitchplusone 11:29, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Count me out

[edit]

I am more likely to quit wikipedia outright (or dissappear and avoid this project) than to have to cope with the potential issues that would arise from such a project - simply not worth the agony - your message I believe gives false hope - there are neither the numbers nor the capacity of the editors of wa to even consider it. Unless you have some magic wand - its a terrible waste of time and energy SatuSuro 10:25, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi OIC. Just to let you know publicly I have given notice I will not contact anybody else (e.g. hotels, etc.) about the event. Auroranorth 13:06, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there. Sorry I failed to respond further.

Well, given that you've got 95 people in town, this is indeed going to remain short. But it's not outside of FA range: at 8k text only size it matches common scold, for example. Let's see:

  • The first question: is there anything else? You have an 'Alleged problems' as the longest section, which may be POV. The subjects need better introduction: who were these four different groups? What cultural background? Any quotes from the aboriginals themselves? And might you describe the actual layout of the community?
  • The lead is the clearest deficiency. It seems to be an assemblage of disparate facts rather than a real overview.
  • The three pics should be broken up.
  • Only a couple of things to quibble over with ref formatting, so that's one thing done.
  • Some other minor things would likely come up at FAC, such as dash usage.

I haven't looked closely at the prose. Build a better lead and I'll come back and make some clean-up edits myself, if you like. Cheers, Marskell 15:21, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sockpuppetry

[edit]

You've unblocked Tallum (talk · contribs) and I honestly cannot understand why. There is nothing "harsh" about indef blocking the account, but rather just standard practice. The "master" account Archifile (talk · contribs) was blocked for 72 hours for the abuse.[1] The sockpuppet account (Tallum) was indefinitely blocked, as is normal and appropriate. Would you please restore the indefinite block on Tallum (talk · contribs)? Vassyana 18:33, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Makes sense, though I disagree. Besides being related, Tallum has engaged in activities that are clearly discouraged sock activities, such reverting on behalf of the master account. I do understand your perspective and appreciate the explanation. Vassyana 19:34, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere

[edit]

Hi, I find your intervention on this article a bit hasty. I certainly won't go into an edit war for this point. As I the sources on this subject are scarce, I thought it would be more interesting for users to keep the links added by user Nonib than simply deleting them. I you agree with user Merbabu the article is better without. Let's keep it like this.... --Flying tiger 14:54, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I read yor answer. That's OK; Just to explain my POV : I write for more than a year on Wikipedia, ALWAYS on Greater East Asia War, and I saw many harsh edit wars on articles such as Comfort women, WWII and Eugenics in Shōwa Japan. However, I never saw your interventions on these. Now I see you coming out of nowhere, protecting the article for a benign problem with a message about "edit war against established users". I was actually already taking a look at it when you dropped me a note! It's an excellent article - it's certainly one of the better ones, if not the best I've seen on an electorate, at either state or federal level. A couple of things that might be useful - a bit more about the political history (as opposed to just the redistributions) - who held the seat, who they were, when it changed hands, etc. Also, perhaps a bit more could be said about the demographics of the electorate? Apart from that, it's hard to fault - good stuff! Rebecca 06:08, 15 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tyndale Christian School (South Australia)

[edit]

Hi there,

Just wondering if you could clarify a little bit more why there was a need to remove the article about a real-life school. There are many other school articles which have little to no content but are not marked for deletion. I feel it was important as it is a school in Australia and people may want to find out more information about it. Thanks for clarifying 219.90.180.91 11:00, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I can't figure out what your usual posting ID is so will reply here. I suggest reading my reasoning for deletion at Good News Lutheran School as the issues are very similar in this case. Merely existing is not enough to warrant an article on Wikipedia. In the case of other schools in the same situation, it's either a case of, they're notable but lacking in content (state high schools or eminent private schools can meet the notability threshold), or we'll get to them at some point. The article relating to Jason Peppler does meet the critera for importance or significance due to his significance in the culinary community, and his high-profile influence in the culinary world. Revisiting it, I see an unverified and possibly promotional article about a chef with far too much background information to have been indepenedent, with no notability asserted and a picture which was deleted for copyright reasons. That's why it got deleted. I'm happy to reconsider if you can create an article in your sandbox which meets neutral point of view, notability (biography), no original research and uses independent reliable sources. There are some accusations on the ANi board that I'm edit waring, deserving of a 1RR restriction. Underneath those accusations, is a comment from you that you agree. I'm just wondering if you could clarify that on the ANi board, please. I'm not sure if you are in agreement that I should also get a penalty for edit waring, or if your agreement is referring to a different comment further up the thread. Thanks for your help, --Lester 16:05, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Coordinate updates

[edit]

I think your comments in Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Geographical coordinates are based upon coord behavior before some recent changes. For example, Mount Augustus National Park coordinates show the Australia links at the top of the list. Also, if I tinker with the scale in the GeoHack URL then the MSN Maps Australia map changes its scale. (SEWilco 23:08, 23 October 2007 (UTC))[reply]

"I am not sure if that works in everyone's browsers, or in those outside of Australia" All I know is it worked for me and I'm not in Australia. GeoHack has been in use for quite a while; the region sensitivity was recently added (I thought "region:AU" had to be added but apparently it automatically detected Australia). Infobox

[edit]

I agree. That's the same conclusion that I've come to. --AussieLegend 05:02, 27 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, {{LGAs SEQ}} definitely was the culprit. Esk and Gatton both look OK to me now. I haven't tried any others. --AussieLegend 05:11, 27 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Words put into my mouth

[edit]

Dear Orderinchaos,

This is just a note to inform you that at the discussion at Template talk:Infobox Australian Place my words were changed and my signature signed for me without my knowledge. You too were given a "vote" where you had written none. Please see the diff here: [4]

Please see the note that I have left with the user in question here: User_talk:TheJosh#Do_NOT_sign_things_for_me. You may not feel the same way about this as I do, but I thought you should know.

I have also informed User:Mattinbgn.

New WA state boundaries

[edit]

"The Nationals are also under severe pressure. Some commentators predict they could lose up to three of their five MPs. This would also cost them party status and the substantial funding it attracts."[5] - I know a certain boy who is gonna be mighty peeved at that! :P Timeshift 00:03, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It will be interesting to see how WA actually polls - the ACNielsen poll with Labor trailing 45-55 is a bit of an eye-opener... Timeshift 21:05, 1 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Depopulation

[edit]

What you believe is not entirely correct. Although the KMT on Taiwan no longer insists the ROC is the legitimate China, it still calls Beijing "mainland China". But the usage of "mainland China" here with the category got nothing to do with Taiwan, but Hong Kong and Macau. If you bother to look at any document issued by the Chinese government, it uses "mainland China" to call the rest of the country that is not part of Hong Kong or Macau - in other words the 22 provinces, 5 autonomous regions and 4 direct cities combined. The Hong Kong and Macau governments use "mainland China" in the same manner too.

Believe it or not, Google for the evidence. [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] [12] [13] 203.218.46.10 06:17, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Old school

[edit]

Thought you'd enjoy this, considering your interest in templates. Over two years ago, an eternity in Wiki-time, when there was no conditional syntax for templates, and infoboxes were a funky new idea that people were still trying to come to terms with, I wanted a generic infobox that could be used for people that have held office(s). Since one didn't exist, I created the "officerbox" collection of templates (we had to use multiple templates before the conditional syntax was implemented). In the space of a few months I used it in seven articles on prominent W.A. politicians. Then the conditional syntax arrived, the infobox craze swept the 'pedia, and I moved with the times in taking up the new templates.

I just realised that my officerbox templates are still there, and these seven articles are still using them! Over the next few days I'll replace them with calls to {{Infobox Officeholder}}. The latter isn't as flexible as my officerbox ;-), but I have no wish to cling to glories past. If you want to check out my archaic handiwork, have a look at Newton Moore. I'll clean that one up last so you get a chance to check it out.
